Does anyone else write stories on their phone?

I find myself more and more using my phone and google docs to write. Now pecking away at my iPhone's virtual keyboard isn't actually my idea of fun but using my phone makes it possible for me to actually use those snippets of time throughout my day that would otherwise be useless. Waiting for the bus, waiting for potatoes to boil for dinner...you get the idea. My phone is always with me and so I find my productivity in regards to writing has increased. Between my four kids and my full time job snatching time back from the abyss is the key to happiness in my world ;)

I have a cell phone . . . somewhere . . . I think. And when I can't possibly avoid it, I occasionally use or answer the landline phone. But, other than that . . . no.

I do! Similar story here: 3 kids, work full-time, etc. I just downloaded Documents To Go for iPhone, which has MS Word. When a plot bunny runs across my path, I start it on my phone. Once it reaches the point where I need better editing abilities, I email it to my yahoo Acct and retrieve it on my laptop.

I also make most of my BB posts on my phone.

Email, posts, PMs, IMs, TXTs, yes. Stories, no.

Posted from my iDroidBerry. ;)

!!!

I had no idea this existed. Thanks, Syd. I've been writing in the notes pad, which can be a bit awkward when, say, my mom tries to see what my grocery list is.

For the record, while I hate hate hate talking on the phone and rarely, if ever, answer it, I write a good bit on it. I read a lot in bed, but I write a good bit, too, when I can't fall asleep (which is, oh, about ninety percent of the time). It goes in fits and starts, but I know I wrote about a quarter of my earth day story on my phone.

There is a name for something similar, btw: cell phone novel, and they are particularly popular in Japan.

I don't have the type of cell phone you can write on, and I don't know that I will any time soon.

I've tried, but transferring documents back and forth seems to be more trouble than it's worth.

Can you send texts? I write using a phone that only has T9 by sending text messages to Twitter, 130 characters at a time. Yes, I do sometimes get that desperate. Yes, I have lost followers. They can kindly go and fuck themselves.

When you're desperate, you can write on ANYTHING!

But now, even though I hate iPhones passionately, I want one that has Google Docs so I CAN really write on the go. <3 My goodness. I would be so happy if I could write anywhere without having to drive my poor Tweeps crazy by flooding them with a dozen tweets just to preserve mah plot bunnies.

Yes... my phone is so old that it does not have email. The notes function is limited to even less characters (60 or something). Though I haven't tried accessing Google docs on it either, who knows, maybe I could. It DOES access the internet (I can get on Lit!), but most sites don't work (ei: any site that's not predominantly text. Email sure doesn't...).

This is back to the future time for me.

I don't even have a cell phone, but In 1974, I went to work in Palo Alto for a little electronics company that was down on it luck due to the advances in Sat Com.

At that time the power you are talking about using, to process all that data and make all those connections, would be housed in a box the size of a double width Freezer. and cost $50,000

Yet today we hold the power of communication in our palm and wonder why it costs so much? :):)

If only integrity could advance at such a pace?

I write my stories in my AOL email and send mail them to myself. I copy and paste it when I continue writing.

It's much simpler, plus it beats saving porn stories on the computer.

I can send texts. I have a Motorola something-or-other. Accolade, maybe. Anyway, it takes pics and sends texts, but no music or video, or I can send a text to someone's email address. I think I'd have some web access if I activated and paid for it, which I won't. And my phone does have a note utility.

I try to keep a notebook with me, and I usually have my Kindle, for which I bought a program called "Take Note," and I've used that a bit to write down a couple of ideas.

I am totally confused by pricing plans on smart phones, not to mention put off by the prices of the phones themselves, so it'll be a while before I get that far.

Me too Tat! The app is $9.99, and worth every cent, I think. It's available on other phones, too.

Penn, I resisted for a long time. I had a Palm Centro. I wrote on it, but it was pretty useless for Internet. Then DH got an iPhone for work and me being the gadget girl, further resistance was futile. It had me in it's tractor beam. Now I'm addicted.

It's possible, but I don't do it. I don' t even like to send a long e-mail on the phone. Anything longer than this post is coming from a computer.

I just have google docs site saved as a bookmark in safari on my iPhone. It keeps open the last doc I was working on unless I close it and when I am at home I can access it on my computer without the pain of transferring it plus when I want to use my phone again I have the current version :) You would need a phone with Internet to be able to do that though. Of course the only reason I have a cell phone at all is so that I always have Internet lmao so there you go.

I'm sure I'd have fun with one if I had one. However I'm not so much resisting as can't afford it, based on what I've seen. I'm trying to get my cell phone bill down as much as possible, and I don't think a data plan will help. :)

Sounds like your phone is more advanced than mine. If you can send texts, you can link up your phone to Twitter and then sending messages to 21212 will tweet them. However, if you wanted to keep your notes private, making a second Twitter, you could add /d (account) before the tweet and then just check the direct messages.

And if you can send texts to email addresses, well, you've got it made! Just write that way.

I expect it would get expensive though, so the notebook is probably a better idea. I tend to have my best ideas while halfway through my workday though, where I can't just keep a notebook on me but I can jot down a text or two.

I got the phone going on two years ago, after the previous one took a trip through the washer. :(

I don't do Twitter; I imagine I could hook up the phone but I'm not going to. I'm just not going to do anything that adds cost to the bill right now. When the contract is up on this one, I'm going to move to something else, possibly pay as you go.

I think all the note utilities are good, and like I said, got one for my Kindle. It's not the best to type on but it's better than nothing, and I don't always have paper.

That is true. When your kids get older, tho, a data plan will serve a good purpose. You don't have to have an iPhone for that, tho. (Data plans for iPhones and Blackberries are more expensive than other phones, even other smartphones. I think because of their superior Internet capabilities.)

I still carry a mini tape recorder. Although it doesn't use tape any longer.

Yes! I use my phone to write stories! It's convenient and like many of the folks here I use google docs. :)

Well, one learns something new every day.
I had always thought phones were for talking on.
Give me a real keyboard. . . . .

Oh I have no doubt that some day I'll have one. Just not right now. The kids are 7 and 3, so they don't need one. Plus I just haven't figured out the plans -- some seem to have separate rates for talking v. data and I don't feel like sorting through them all.

Well no doubt a real keyboard it 3000% better than my phone but I don't have anything but my phone when I am at the bus stop or waiting to pay for the groceries or....you get the picture. But I do have my phone and I can access google docs so there is an immediacy that comes with using my phone and it translates into more actual writing time for me which I appreciate. My phone doesn't replace my computer but it is a great supplement to it.

I've never had a cell phone. Don't plan on getting one any time soon, either. But if I did....uhmmmm, maybe I would. Seems like it'd be difficult, though.
