Do we writers know enough about fetish as writers or do we stay, as authors, in a realm of our somewhat vanilla or cultural experience, and never venture forth beyond traditional BDSM and fetish?

im pretty happy in my ignorance.
kidding. im learning something new everyday and loving it. have i ventured forth further than bdsm or lesbianism...no. will i? not sure..maybe when the kids leave home.

Those who write it well know enough.
Those who write it poorly, not know enough.

you people are gorgeous enough, now I need ... to answer you!

i learned that being safe...being sane...being consensual is the basis for all my beliefs be it in the bdsm arena or otherwise. i sought out techniques and learned what i liked...how about you?

Hmm. Well, if a writer writes vanilla, and likes vanilla, I suppose that s/he knows enough - at least, if that's what the audience wants as well. I think Lucky has the pith of it; if you're writing badly through ignorance, you need to learn more. If you're writing well, then you know enough, whether it's "enough" because you know enormous amounts of things or "enough" because you only write what you know enough to write about.

I thought it was interesting that Vella listed lesbianism next to BDSM. Is homosexual sex really a "fetish," or just sex? And is that answer the same for everyone? Is a straight person sleeping with a member of the same sex just to see what it's like at the same "kink" rating as a gay person sleeping with a member of the same sex because that's what has always felt normal?

Just wondering. My own life is uncomplicated; everything involving a horse is generally accepted to be thoroughly kinky.

To an extent, we all write what we know. When I set a story in pre napoleonic europe, I went and studied up until I felt I could portray the period credibly. If I were going to set something in persia, pre thermopolaye, I would have to research again. If I am setting it in Mississippi, circa 1984, I already know enough to do so.

With the sex, it's the same. If I know the nuts and bolts I can just jump in. If I have never tried something or it is something beyond my experience, I research before I write.

Do we need to? To serve what purpose? What if we don't care?
Exactly.
I write what turns me on. I know where my boundaries are- on both sides, from too far, to not far enough. What I like, I learn about, and when I write, I write what I know. Every action in my stories can be attempted safely.
Although you might not want to do all of it in one session...
If you're looking for dyke BDSM, Charley, read "The Baroness' Boy"
And I'm writing a sequel to it right now!

I'm not interested in fetish.

For the most part, the darkest I get is the sexual roads I won't travel because I won't turn back if I do.

I'm not trying to turn on everyone else... me is enough.

Sincerely,
ElSol

What do you mean? Is that the only kind of eroricism that matters?

I know all the shit I need to write the stuff I want.
