One should be very careful when accessing the net' while at work, regardless if its just for email and/or logging on to an explict website. Your computer's activities can be traced with a simple click.

Our office has about 160 people in it. All but 7 of us are on a network that is highly monitored by IT. I'm one of the 7 who are still on the old system, and although they have the capability to monitor us, they don't bother. If they did notice that I visit a site called literotica.com they'd probably click and tell me to stop, but that would be the end of it. I wouldn't get fired for it.

It's pretty much a moot point for me as my last day is Friday. The new job will not afford me the luxury, I'm sure. *sigh* I'm sure I'll be able to surf between calls there, but I'll have to find something other than Lit to occupy my time there. LOL Now THAT brings up a real interesting point. 2 years ago I was doing a small project with a company that provides firewalls (a combined hardware and software solution). We were accessing a lot of porn servers at the time. Working with them during developement. It turns out that some off the best tuned Linux/FreeBSD servers on the net are the porn servers.

Actually turned out to be a damned good 'box'.

My employer monitors

So I make damn sure that anything that is not company related is accessed only during breaks or lunch, and even then, I avoid any site that might set off the bells and whistles. I know of people who surf porn and some of the 'off color' sites while at work, but they're playing with fire. Six months or so ago, my employer sprang 'random' drug tests on 6 of us whom they suspected of smoking pot. I fit their 'profile' of a drug user, but their test came up negative because I smoke pot so infrequently anymore that I came back clean. They'd save a ton of money if they could find a reason to let me go, so I make sure that surfing 'inappropriate sites' isn't going to give them the excuse they're looking for.

We have internet service at work, and we use it to browse or play games, but if I feel the urge to log into Lit, I take my laptop and access it from there. I do know one guy at my hospital that was fired for "porn" watching.

I've been taking my laptop a lot recently, as I'm working on a history paper. Lit is my homepage (Gawd, I am addicted) and when I go to use IE, Lit is the first thing that pops up, I have to have a look around and then, I'll search for what I need.

Actually the developement was in place. The porn industry certainly was the first to really take advantage of most of the technology.

Audio and visual files are extremely storage intensive. So that was the first cut at it. I can remember working on projects that required graphics when a 70Meg disk was $900. You tried to pack it down as much as possible.

Then as the internet took off, information transmission became the issue.

The porn industry has been in the lead as far as technology deployment for many years now. Mostly because of the profitability of the market. One of the early leaders in compressed graphics was CompuServe with the old GIF format. And Cserve was never a real porn site. Still isn't to my knowledge.

The University department where I worked for three and a half years did not monitor our online activity. There was a lot of downtime in my daily routine and I accessed Lit frequently. This was brought to my supervisor's attention by a vindictive employee on another floor who I had not gone out of my way to ass kiss. They seized my computer while I was on sick leave and discovered hundreds of images cached in the hardware. It turns out that they were avatars that I had never bothered turning off while surfing this site.

They didn't have to fire me, but they did. The department was downsizing and they used my indiscretion as an excuse to let me go. I didn't think it could happen to me.

It could happen to anybody. Be wise. Don't take unnecessary risks especially now - jobs are hard to find.

We are not allowed Internet access at all in the hospital. We are on the computer frequently, charting and such, but anything beyond that is against the rules. They even blocked the games when they found out some were playing solitare on their break.

If I did have access at work, I wouldn't come here. I can't imagine anything important enough on here that can't wait till I'm on my own time.

What most people seem to be overlooking here is that it isn't just about visiting Lit or other porn sites (although the majority of companies and government agencies do have specific rules against that particular genre).

The fact is that any surfing of the net on company time is stealing. You are there to do a job for them. They are not paying you to play on the internet. Nor are they paying you to chat on the phone with your friends. Or read a book. Or plan a dinner party. You can do all that on your own time. At home. Or away from work.

I am pretty sure no job description exists that states you should read the news, follow the stocks, find that coq au vin recipe, check out barely legal teen pussy or play games as part of your duties. And I am equally positive that your boss would not appreciate that even if you got your work done for the day. My guess is they would expect you to take the initiative and start a new work-related project.

Of course, my saying it is meaningless. You have to decide for yourselves whether or not you are comfortable engaging in such behavior. Keep in mind, however, the old adage: you play, you pay.

Not only can they monitor and track your computer movements, they can assess your productivity as well. Of course, it is easier to say "I got canned for writing emails and forwarding jokes" than it is to explain why you were viewing porn or chatting on Lit's BB. But still, you're out of a job, so does it really matter the reason why?

Actually Agent99 (oh beloved, long-lost sissy!) I'm allowed to surf the 'Net during work. The people in my department get a call every 5 minutes, on average. During the late shift, when I work, the calls can be as far as 30 or sometimes 45 minutes apart. 3 of us are capable of doing other work in that time, but the other 4 in our department (who have been there the longest, btw) just are not technologically adept enough to take on other duties. Since they've learned that giving some of us more work and not paying us extra for it doesn't fly, they don't care how we fill in the time.

Actually, while I agree generally with your comments, not all bosses are that strict. Me, for example. I think it makes a difference to some extent whether you are talking about salary or hourly employees. Mine get paid salaries, and no overtime pay. As long as they get their work done, I don't care if they take 8 hours to do it and go home, or 9 hours to do it with an hour of internet time during the day, as an example. We have really busy periods during the year where that is not possible. But some slow times, too, when it is.

I also have one woman who is addicted to minesweeper and plays it constantly when she is on long phone calls. I don't care, she gets her work done.

And part of my own job IS following the news and the stocks.

So, in general, I do agree that work time should be for work. But you have to know your boss' attitude towards nonwork related time on the internet or in email. That's for nonporn items, of course. Porn should always be offlimits while at work, even if your boss loves the stuff.
