Do you still access Lit while you are at work?

I got an email from a Lit friend yesterday, someone I hadn't heard from in a very long time. He never posted that much to Lit in the first place, but he lurked a lot. I know it is personal, but you don't know who it is, so I'm posting a couple slightly edited paragraphs from it:

"I've gone and done it royally this time. On September 11 of this year (yeah, good choice of dates), I was fired from my job at xxxxx. (I just received your note today...it was held for me by a secretary with whom I have a good relationship.) The reason? You guessed it! Viewing unacceptable material on xxxxx computers during working hours. Right! Good old Literotica and I just couldn't do without each other, I guess. And it cost me dearly! How stupid could I have been?

Telling my wife and family was a chore I never want to go through again, for any reason. "

Discuss, please.

no matter how silly and wrong i think it is for employer to sack someone like that ... you have to be careful and be aware that it could happen if you use such websites

i sometimes send emails from work in my break ... i actually asked permission before i did that

He's not the first or the last to be fired for the same reason.

I think it's rather foolish to surf the net for pleasure on a work computer, knowing how easily traced everything that we do is (thanks for that Bill Gates - fucker).

I sit at a computer with a headset most of the day and I don't have the time or inclination to go anywhere besides the work.

I don't have internet access at work, but if I did, I would not be surfing anywhere on company time. Most companies have quite strict policies on internet access at work these days. I know my fiancee has 'net access & one of the guys that works with him got warned about some of the sites he was looking at. He didn't lose his job, but he took the warning seriously.

The company pays for the gear and the access and all of that. What if a person is on break and checking email at Literotica.com and the company IT logs it as visiting porn sites?

I have seen other posts about getting the ax for being here while on the clock. Sounds like a good way to find a new job.

It is sad. He was a very respected person in the community and being fired for something like looking at porn on work time hurt him and his family a lot.

We joke about being addicted to this place, but I think if you can't let it alone while you are at work and getting paid to do something else, you really do have a problem that isn't so funny.

I know some people will say they are bored at work and have time to waste, they aren't on a network so no one will know, etc. But they are all at risk for being fired, too. I just wanted everyone to think again, to decide if a Lit addiction is worth being fired. Not just being fired, but having to explain to wife/husband and family what happened.

I don't want to lose any of the popular posters on the board. I just don't want to see any of them get fired, either.

That is exactly why I don't use Lit mail. I do have access to my personal email account from work, but I won't check Lit from there. Not even the email. No porn site is safe to go to for any reason from a work computer. For me, anyway.

very true cheyenne its just not worth it ... if you get fired for looking at a porn site then you might have trouble getting hired again ... i do feel very sorry for this poster

and it doesn't matter if its your break literotica is still porn (exactly the same as looking at porn pictures in the eyes of the employer) so you shouldn't be viewing it from work more then likely

damn

Thanks Cheyenne.
I do access this from work and I although I think it is safe here as it is a small office I should know better.
It would be too hard to explain to family and friends.

The last place I worked at that had 'Net access and a computer for me had Net Nanny in place. I'll probably have a discussion with my IT manager whenever I get around to get a job about putting one up on my computer. Nip it in the bud. I don't want to do non-company things on non-company time, but my Lit addiction is pretty bad. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure in my book.

I'm not ashamed that I frequent a porn-site, so it's no big deal for me to discuss this. Since I don't have this addiction to anything online but the Lit BB, it's not that much a problem to just prevent my access to it.

You don't put the AA meeting next door to a package liquor store, likewise, you don't put a Lit addict on a computer with unrestricted 'Net access.

I did notice something interesting. The college has computers everywhere. Some require you to login to use them and some don't. I never access the BB from the ones where I log in. I do access it from the ones where I don't. Maybe I have some willpower, but I'm not betting on it.

I wouldn't dream of accessing Lit from work. I'm usually working in an area with two other people in pretty close quarters. I don't need them knowing about my "other side" although one of them has figured it out already.

See, I'd call myself a Lit addict, too. And I have a computer at work with unrestricted net access due to my job position. BUT, I also know that every site I gain access to is logged. I'm not sure in how much detail, but I don't intend to ever find out. Even if I can get here during work hours, I won't. It isn't so much willpower as it is a mindset of just forgetting that Lit exists during the day, I think.

My hope is that my job is sufficiently challenging and frustrating that I won't be bored with it. If I get that bored that often it's time to change jobs.

I'm going into computer science so I foresee a nice long career on a computer being both incensed, challenged, frustrated, and in full exercise of my intelligence. I live for that. It's why I love coming here so much.

I'm somewhat weak in the will. I wish I could, but I don't know if I can. At least not now. That's okay, though. Work is at least 5 years away. 10 if I get my way.

It is easier for company's policy to restrict access and deal with all employees evenly. Zero tolerance is much better in the eyes of government inspectors.

Well it's not an option for me at my current job anyway but even if it was - no how, no way! I have a right to go to any site I want in my own home, on my own computer, on my own time. At work is at work, and it's not up to me. There are clear boundaries.

Work

In the Army they monitor which sites you go to. I could see it now..."Soldier what the fuck are you doing?" or "CID is here to see you." Talk about a mess. I access my lit at home...only at home.

...now fone sex on company time is different. :)

People, give me an AMEN for cell phones.

AAAAAAAMEN.

Hmmmm. This one is near and dear to my heart. Where I work I am in 'camp' for two weeks at a time. At work we have computers with internet access, at camp too. the pc's at camp are for us to use as we see fit, of course with the exception of beign able to come here.

I feel that if they are offering pc's for us to use on our own time, well, I should be able to at least come to lit. Oh well, I think I am going to get a laptop and 56k connection and cruise here from camp anyway. fuckers.

OK then. My rant is over for now.l;)

Any "work" computer on a network is accessing the net through a proxy server. You can bet that tools are in place to "log" every site you go to and how long you're there. You're e-mails as well are probably archived in the server without your knowledge. Most companies consider the computers they provide as 'tools' and are therefore subject to their rules and procedures. Correspondence via these computers is considered "Company Business". Use your company account for personal e-mails at your own risk.

If you have a hardwire hookup to a phone line, or are accessing the net through an IDSN, Cable, or DSL modem off a hub, you're probably OK. However, the company can still install 'tracking' software in your computer that they can access when you aren't there. So even the above aren't 100%

This is the third instance of a Lit. member getting the sack for this reason in the past 3 months or so.

Take care all.

too busy.

In fact, I am so busy that work interferes with my personal life.

they will lose me eventually. to death or dishonor.

I have net access, but don't visit Lit.. I'm too scared to, especially since my computer faces the supes office.

I do check my yahoo mail and surf a little bit between calls (calls are like 15 minutes between) I'd be way bored if I didn't. But even doing that scares me a bit, just cuz I'm using it for personal reason on business time. I'm a net addict, I can't help it. I hate taking books to work because I can't concentrate on the story when a call is bleeping in here and there.

I'm a temp at this place, and temps have been known to be fired on the spot, without even a warning beforehand. I don't want to risk it just cuz I'm a slave to Lit, a paycheck is more important. But don't think I'm not fighting the urge all day :D
