Mad magazine makes its debut in May as a 32-page comic book full of zany nonsense. Alfred E. Neuman has yet to make his appearance, but he's coming.

THIS makes sense! I've been called MAD many times in my life!

Clarence Birdseye marketed the first frozen peas. A thing only a mother could love.

Thank you, Clarence!

King George VI of Britain (1936-52) was found dead in bed by a servant delivering the morning tea. Elizabeth gets the job. A pic of a young Queen.

My folks married in January (I was born in December!), and the received as a wedding gift a set of Queen Elizabeth coronation shotglasses!

Mrs. Paul's introduces frozen fish sticks. Way to go Mrs. Paul! Now this is my idea of a food group.

Wonder if Mr. Birdseye and Mrs. Paul had a thing going on?

Mr. Potato Head arrives!

YAY!!

The first Holiday Inn opens and has the familiar bright yellow and green sign.

I still love then!

Gibson introduced the Les Paul model electric guitar, which was destined to become one of the most popular rock guitars of all time.

My family and I saw Les Paul and Mary Ford many times at the '64 World's Fair!

Lipton onion soup mix comes along.

Another treat!

Wow! At this birth of the TV watchers, I remember seeing these artists many times on the tube (a very small tube too!).

I grew up loving Perry Como, and watched his show, and would dream he would be my father (I didn't remember mine, and thought he had the best voice and disposition I could imagine!).

Thanks, Arden, for ALL these memories!! (Even though I wasn't born until December, I think I must have picked up on some of this through the womb!):D

William Shatner's version of Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds is considered by many to be the worst musical rendition of all time. [1] It regularly wins radio station competitions to find the Worst music of all time. Shatner defends his "stylings", refusing to acknowledge it as an experiment that just went wrong.
The rendition, along with an equally bizarre rendition of "Mr. Tambourine Man" by Shatner, was released in 1968 on an album of Shatner's vocals, The Transformed Man. The album was widely panned on the Worldwide Web on the "Captain James T. Kirk Singalong Page", which began serving clips as early as 1993.

It is often compared to Leonard Nimoy's version of the children's song The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins, which is widely considered a comparably poor recording. Given that it chronicles Bilbo's adventures including outwitting trolls, it may be appropriate inspiration for Wikipedia regulars.

Nimoy's "If I Had a Hammer" is reputed to be worse. It may be that "Baggins" is more commonly used as a comparison to cast more light on how truly incomparably bad Shatner's vocals are. It is rumoured that the two of them may have conspired to release the worst album ever, just to see if Star Trek fans (who were not at that time the cash cow they are now) would buy it. Nimoy being an accomplished comedy director today, it seems credible.

Florence Foster Jenkins often vies with Shatner for the dubious "worst" honour. A recent Canadian Broadcasting Corporation vote put Shatner first, Jenkins second. However, Shatner is a Canadian, so this may be favouritism, or the fact that many more people have lived through Shatner's song: most of those who heard Jenkins are now dead.

Doggie in the Window

Artist: Patti Page
Words and Music by Bob Merrill

Peaked at # 1 in 1953

CHORUS
How much is that doggie in the window? *(arf! arf!)*
The one with the waggley tail
How much is that doggie in the window? *(arf! arf!)*
I do hope that doggie's for sale

I must take a trip to California
And leave my poor sweetheart alone
If he has a dog, he won't be lonesome
And the doggie will have a good home

CHORUS

I read in the paper there are robbers **(roof! roof!)**
With flashlights that shine in the dark
My love needs a doggie to protect him
And scare them away with one bark

I don't want a bunny or a kitty
I don't want a parrot that talks
I don't want a bowl of little fishies
He can't take a goldfish for a walk

How much is that doggie in the window? *(arf! arf!)*
The one with the waggley tail
How much is that doggie in the window? *(arf! arf!)*
I do hope that doggie's for sale

It isn't really an 'old show', but have been watching the old MacGyver shows on cable. Both TVland and Spike TV have episodes...still love how he could make weapons out of nothing at all!

I remember, long ago, when the man that played MacGuyver portrayed a doctor on General Hospital... must have been right after my son was born in '82?

Speaking of which, the little darlin' will be coming home from college tomorrow for Spring Break. This should be a lot of fun, he's as hyper at age 21 as he was at age 6, lol... :D

Another song popped into mind here... "Mockingbird Hill." ;)

One of those great old songs...

Kingston Town
by Harry Belafonte

Down the way, where the nights are gay,
and the sun shines daily on the mountain top,
I took a trip on a sailing ship,
and when I reach Jamaica I made a stop.

But I'm sad to say,
I'm on my way,
won't be back for many a day.
My heart is down,
my head is turning around,
I had to leave a little girl in Kingston Town.

Sounds of laughter everywhere,
and the dancing girls swing to and through.
I must declare my heart is there,
thou I've been from Maine to Mexico.

But I'm sad to say,
I'm on my way,
won't be back for many a day.
My heart is down,
my head is turning around,
I had to leave a little girl in Kingston Town.

At the market you can hear,
ladies cry out while on their heads they bear,
acky rice, salt, fish are nice
and the rum is fine any time a year.

But I'm sad to say,
I'm on my way,
won't be back for many a day.
My heart is down,
my head is turning around,
I had to leave a little girl in Kingston Town.

Down the way, where the nights are gay,
and the sun shines daily on the mountain top,
I took a trip on a sailing ship,
and when I reach Jamaica I made a stop.

But I'm sad to say,

I just looked it up, Arden--you were right. Richard Dean Anderson did play on General Hospital, however, it was in 1963 when he was a 13 year-old teenager.

Ben Casey was cool...Marcus Welby, MD was one of my faves--loved James Brolin with his cool motorcycle and the office person was Consuelo (Elena Verdugo). Neat show!

I also liked watching Adam-12 and CHiPs...although I never understood why Eric Estrada didn't have bugs in his teeth from flashing that toothy smile when riding the motorcycle at 70 MPH down the freeway! LOL

Camp Granada

Hello Mudda, hello Fadda,
Here I am at Camp Granada.
Camp is very entertaining,
And they say we'll have some fun if it stops raining.

I went hiking with Joe Spivy;
He developed poison ivy.
You remember Leonard Skinner;
He got ptomain poisoning last night after dinner.

All the counselors hate the waiters,
And the lake has alligators,
And the head coach wants no sissies,
So he reads to us from something called "Ulysses".

Now I don't want this should scare ya,
But my bunk mate has malaria.
You remember Jeffrey Hardy,
They're about to organize a searching party.

Take me home, oh Mudda, Fadda,
Take me home, I hate Granada!
Don't leave me in the forest where
I might get eaten by a bear.

Take me home, I promise I will not make noise,
Or mess the house with other boys.
Oh, please don't make me stay,
I've been here one whole day.

Dearest Father, darling Mother,
How's my precious little brother?
Let me come home if you miss me,
I would even let Aunt Bertha hug and kiss me.

Wait a minute, it stopped hailing,
Guys are swimming, gals are sailing.
Playing baseball, gee that's betta,
Mudda, Fadda, kindly disregard this letter!

FYI: Whenever MacGyver made a weapon, the writers always left out a critical step so that it coud not be duplicated by an overzelous fan.

I wasn't old enough to watch soaps in 1963 :D

Richard Dean Anderson's Film Appearances:
General Hospital (1976 - 1981)
RDA played the role of young resident and neurosurgeon Dr. Jeff Webber.

I must have seen him during his last year on the show.

It was 1976 when he came to General Hospital and that is where he launched his career, he played Dr. Jeff Webber! I always thought he was so hot!!!!!! Then I followed him to other shows like MacGyver, etc... I remember one time he was buried alive under a skylight because someone was having an affair and they set off a bomb and he was trying to rescue them. I think it was Monica Quartermaine when she was having an affair with Rick Webber.
