Do you pick up Hitchhikers?

I've picked up a couple, one was a woman who needed a ride and the other was a couple whose car broke down and needed a ride
 
No, but I have flashed to get a ride before. Wasn't the only riding done that day. :devil:

having spent many, many, many lonely hours hitchiking around this country, I always try to give a hitcher a ride UNLESS, my family is with me. I NEVER risk their safety.
 
Never have. Now that cell phones are ubiquitous, there's less reason than ever before. I'd like to help, but not at the expense of my own personal safety.
 
Not now, I did years ago though, it still makes me laugh i had a friend in the van with me and we picked up two girls, after we shut the doors there was no need to tell us they had been working in a stable. Jeeze, The nearest i can get to it now is buying Burgers at Tesco's
 
I use to pick up people on our local roads. We have no public transportation. I still laugh when I think of one young guy I picked up on my way to my village. I worked a a party supply warehouse at the time so I always carried a box cutter. As he got in my car, I moved the box cutter from my passenger seat to my driver's door handle. He spotted it after we were moving. He couldn't get out of my car fast enough. He worked as a waiter in a local restaurant but never made eye contact after that ride.
 
Years ago I did and I also hitched as well. But... would not do it now unless my car broke down or I felt the woman or person was safe...but you never know.
 
I did. It was a long time ago. I was young and trusting. The fellow looked absolutely pitiful, and I couldn't leave him in the rain. I dropped him off when he said he could get out. Must have been when I was in college, because I vividly recall my father giving me what for about picking up a stranger. Guess I thought I was invincible. I would not do it today, and I hate that. So many bad things happen that we're afraid to help people who may actually need an outreach of mercy.
 
I wouldn't dare to pick up a hitch hiker these days.

I agree with RA that it is sad, though. I used to hitch hike a lot back in the late 80s with my then husband. Mostly it was truckers who would pick us up. One time we were picked up by a very kind old couple who absolutely insisted on driving us right to our front door instead of dropping us off at the nearest convenient layby, which is what usually happened.

Mind you there was a surprising number of people who thought it funny to slow down as if they were going to pick us up and would then speed off as we approached the car. Happened the most when it was raining. :mad:
 
I picked up 2 hitchhikers last summer. It was late afternoon but still hotter than shit. It was a guy and a girl, probably in their early 20's. They both had those big hiking backpacks. We were out in the middle of nowhere and they wanted to get into the city. Holy shit, did they ever stink. And they knew it too, and they apologized. Apparently they were making their way from Arizona to New York and had been on the road for about 2 weeks. Only a handful of people had given them rides. Most nights they "stealth camped" in fields, but they were going to treat themselves to a motel room and decent showers that night. I talked to them for about 10 minutes before they both passed out and slept for about an hour until we got into the city. Dude then pulls out his iphone and a makes a reservation at the nearest motel.

"We're not broke," he explained. "We just wanted an adventure." I dropped them off and got $10 for my trouble and a little scallop shell. "It's the symbol of St. James. He protects pilgrims," they told me.

And that's my experience with hitchhikers.
 
I used to in the 1960s and 70s.

The hitchhikers of my past inspired a couple of my stories but only at the "What if?" level.

I rarely see hitchhikers today.

i bet the 70's was perfect for it ...knowing all the hippies back than as freakazoids!
 
There's one guy, on the main road into town, I always give a lift to.
He lives with his alcoholic father (came back to Tassie to take care of the old man). His dad sneaks out and takes the car every couple of days and goes to the local pub, and then this guy has to hitch a ride in and go pick him up.
Both are dirt poor, but the son is a nice guy trying to do the right thing.
 
One time when I was a girl, I was hitch hiking home from cheer leading practice and this beautiful woman picked me up. No sooner did I get into the car when she started making comments about how short my skirt was how big my breasts were, and if I had to where a sports bra. Well, I had never had sex with a woman before but let me tell you I found myself getting very aroused.

I used to see hitchhikers all over back then, not now.

I think the last hitchhiker I saw was July 12, 1979.
 
I used to but I started to develop a pattern so I had to stop before...I think I've said too much.
