Here's my line in the sand...
I'll not share anything told to me in confidence ("confidence", in this case, is "via email or on the phone") with anyone else if the thing told to me in confidence could lead Person#1 to know more about Person#2 than #2 has publicly discussed all on her/his own.
Years ago, green and new to the online world, i had the scary experience of a BB admirer showing up on my doorstep, unannounced, unanticipated, and stating his intention to stay awhile and get to know me a little better. Since then, i've learned to be circumspect in my offering of personal details in a public place like the Lit BB, as well as in email to those i really don't know very well.
One can always tell more. However, once you tell a thing, it's told. You can't take the info away from whomever has it. (Well, okay, you can with the EDIT feature if you've posted it on the BB but not if you've sent the details via email.)
Less is probably more, as the saying goes, with regard to the revealing of personally identifying details to people who are, in reality, little more than strangers (no matter the odd sort of intimacy forged in places like this BB).
There're mostly good people out there but there's definitely some nuts, too. Gotta be safe.
