Do you keep email private?

Here's my line in the sand...

I'll not share anything told to me in confidence ("confidence", in this case, is "via email or on the phone") with anyone else if the thing told to me in confidence could lead Person#1 to know more about Person#2 than #2 has publicly discussed all on her/his own.

Years ago, green and new to the online world, i had the scary experience of a BB admirer showing up on my doorstep, unannounced, unanticipated, and stating his intention to stay awhile and get to know me a little better. Since then, i've learned to be circumspect in my offering of personal details in a public place like the Lit BB, as well as in email to those i really don't know very well.

One can always tell more. However, once you tell a thing, it's told. You can't take the info away from whomever has it. (Well, okay, you can with the EDIT feature if you've posted it on the BB but not if you've sent the details via email.)

Less is probably more, as the saying goes, with regard to the revealing of personally identifying details to people who are, in reality, little more than strangers (no matter the odd sort of intimacy forged in places like this BB).

There're mostly good people out there but there's definitely some nuts, too. Gotta be safe.

I don't consider e-mail any more private than any other conversation unless it is explictly stated that it is not to be shared. I often forward e-mails to others that I think should see them, or think might enjoy them.

Having said that, I seldom repeat conversations, verbal or digital, under my basic policy of NUNYA. Unless there is a specific point to sharing information it doesn't get shared. ie I don't indulge in gossip.

If I am sent something that is funny or cute and it was sent totally for my enjoyment like a joke or something like that I will and have posted it on the BB.

And if I am emailed by someone on one of my threads I have emailed that info to my co creater of the thread so it will help it run more smoothly.

However if someone emails me just to talk or tell me something about thier life...it stays in my mailbox cause that is just the way I see it.

You own the copyright to your letters, which category email falls into. Therefore, it is illegal for someone to quote from your email without your permission. They can obviously quote from their own part in the exchange, obviously.

They can, however, paraphrase or refer to it, as in "A reader recently emailed me some feedback, saying she'd been deeply touched by X in my story because of Y in her own background."

I have no problem with that.

Actually, even copyrighted material can be quoted in review. It's considered fair use as long as it is attributed and isn't being sold.

Actually, this is the exact type of situation that made me start this thread to ask the question. It's the "Y" in my background that I didn't expect to be shared or put on the bb when I didn't share it or put it there myself. If I wanted to do that, I would have just posted the praise to the bb in the first place.

Thanks everyone, for your input. It's interesting to see the vast differences in what we expect from others.

I have only responded to one person on this board with an e-mail ..... I trust they have never shared this info with anyone ... And since, no one has e-mailed refering to anything sent in an e-mail then I feel safe.. To me e-mails are private and confidential and keep them as such....

Oh, and by the way this is not,

I dont care if email is copyrighted by the writer or viewer. To me, emails I get stay between me and the writer. I will only say it or post it on the BB if the writer asks me to.

I keep emails I get to my self, I expect the same.

I agree. emails are private confidential material and should not be broadcasted like yesterdays weather repport.

I might mention the content, even quote it, but I would never, never say who sent me the message unless they specifically tell me to or I ask permission - or the content really didn't matter. In that case, I probably would as in "Todd told me the other day he was at the store and saw a really weird guy". Other than that the way I see it, if the writer had wanted everyone, or even a few select people to know, they would have mailed those people on their own.

I'm sure you're correct. :)

Lit email being down is starting to really drive me nuts, by the way.

E-mail...

I consider E-mail personal...if someone has taken the time to e-mail me I figure they don't want the whole world to know or they would have posted it here! If for some unknown reason I felt that I wanted to share some content in the e-mail on here then I would ask that person first before doing so....it's just the respectful thing to do! ;)

Email may be considered private...but not legally

:p

Does that mean I can post those naked pictures you sent me of yourself, Porn Mom?

:D

Sure ya can Angel Food Cake.

:p

FUCK, I thought I was the only one doing that.

::sigh::

Oh well at least you're not using Mistress's eyes.

NO way...her eyes scare me

:p

Damn, you took all the good parts.

Well I guess I'll keep my own legs...since I like those. And my chest.

I need to borrow Cheyenne's feet though, mine look like a little kid's feet :(

Hey, can I borrow someone else's ass? I don't like mine. The rest of me is good, though. :D
