Okay, so we've been on the site now for several days and have read through a lot of threads.

I have to ask...

I realize this site is pretty much dedicated to fantasy. I've read many stories some of which were obviously fiction and others that were incredible but claimed to have been true. I have no doubt a lot of these stories could be true but how often are they really? How often are posters representing themselves truthfully? Not that it makes any difference as far as the effectiveness of the story but I'm curious to know how many others read a supposedly true account and think, "yeah, right".

I'm reading this and I haven't bought it yet. So no, I don't buy everything I'm reading. :D

Welcome to Lit - to the two of you. ;)

If you're talking about the stories I read them as fiction unless the author tells differently. Spinning a good story is more important to me then if it is true. I'm not reading (or writing) them as factual, they are expressions of the authors imagination.

If you're tlaking about posting on the boards, I'm sure there are some that are being deceitful. Just like some you'd meet off line. Personally I don't have the energy or complusion to be anyone but me. You can get a feel for a person's integrity and sincerity many times. But I know I've been fooled before and most likely will again, but I'd rather not start from a negative bias of others.

Oh yeah, Cathleen. Sorry. I should have specified. I meant stuff that people put in forum posts as having actually happened to them. Take the incest thread, for instance. If you scroll through that you'll find people telling you that they made out with their aunt and three cousins and a brother all on separate occasions which is entirely possible, I guess, but how plausible is it that so many instances of something so taboo would occur to the same person independently? And not just one person. Several people will claim such things as having happened. I find that incredible. But it's not reserved for that thread. Many threads demonstrate similar-type examples. Sometimes it seems as though people are making up false anecdotes to participate in the collective fantasy and fuel the energy of the thread. I don't stand in judgment of it. Some of the writing can be quite scintillating. I just think it's interesting from a sociological perspective.

Thanks for that clarification (no need to apologize) - on that issue then I do think some fabricate their experiences. I have to be honest, I do stand in judgement on lying. I want no part of that behavior.

It is an interesting subject. I suppose some just want the attention it might bring and others might just want to present themselves in that light. There are more then a few instances I've said a quiet 'yeah right' too.

Who knows the motivation of all, certainly not me but it is curious. Sometimes I just want to shout 'bull sh**' on them but it isn't all that important to me living my life.

Glad you brought the subject up. I have to agree, Lit is a gold mine of phycological and sociological study. I like the study of human behavior though so it's like being in a candy store sometimes.

(Also, feel free to call me Cate... if you'd like.)

I do agree with you Cate, on all points here. :rose:

Wow, an intellectual discussion of the human mind. Very interesting. People do have a tendency to exaggerate, often to be accepted as part of the group. We tend to crave attention, each in their own way. This place does have an interesting cross-section of the human condition. Would make a very interesting study, if it could be quantified.

I'm not sure who would have more fun here, Freud or Jung. lol But I'd guess good ol' Freud.

Dont know about ALL, that would be inpossible, but everyone I have met at LIT have been open and honest and truthful. You can usually tell from people's
writing just like you can when you hear people speak. If you only read one post,
you might be fooled but you get a feel for people's sincerity and honesty, after a few posts. I dont think many can hide their true personality all the time.
The shocking things I have posted have been and are true. Im sooooooo
in love with jenny. I guess I was able to read her personality, when I met her through LIT.

Just a Thought...Mine

I am just a person speaking on behalf of myself but the playground is not the place to do any quantified study, there are too many variables. Rightly so there is a cross section of individuals, but I don’t think they would like being guinea pigs for someone’s studies. Peoples frailties to exaggerate add to this conditon of making erotic posting that can or can not be considered as trues that is up to the reader to contend with. Each comes here of their own volition and draws from their encounters here a sense of some sort of fulfillment. Concider why are you here..something missing…comradely…a get away from the daily routine….Maybe looking for the special person you can share common interest with, now stop would you like discussion social studies of Playground individual or group think…Not me I here to enjoy the comradely of individual free thinkers ….LOL who may have a bit of a kinky mind…LOL and have their passions as well as I.

I thought you meant like do I buy every book I read. But you're on about something else. Well no, 99% of these stories are just made up.

I'm sure there is a mix of fact and fiction among the posts. Some half-truths, some mis-remembered and some remembered as they wished they'd happened. I care less about sorting them out on that dimension than whether they are entertaining or not. Some of the most revealing or insightful or funny might well be virtual experiences. The same for those that provide a flash of recognition or epiphany. Since my reaction is what usually matters to me, I don't care to probe to deeply into the veracity of the anecdote.
