Do you bash the beaver if...

And let's not forget that the lowly Beave is the mascot of Buena Vista college..(in the middle of nowhere).... IT is an awsome sight every year to watch them play the GameCocks, especially when the announcer guy gets to excited and forgets and starts yelling......"And the cock's ran right up the middle of the beavers!"
This has got to be some sort of urban legend.

FF, please tell me this is just speculation and that these two schools don't actually compete with each other in football (or wrestling, for that matter ;) ).

From the BVU web site.

The first undefeated team for the Beavers was the 1898 football squad, which went 3-0 that season. Since then Buena Vista athletics grew into 21 collegiate sports, and currently competes in 19 sports in the NCAA Division III.

This is the best part....ROTFLMAO

How BVU Became the Beavers
According to William H. Cumberland's book "History of Buena Vista College," the University's athletic teams officially became the "Beavers" on November 9, 1921.

The Beavers nickname was the product of BV student Karl Nicholas's frustration with sports headlines referring to the athletic teams as BVers. He combined the school's BV initials and the name of a popular soda from that era, BEVO, and came up with Beavers. The name caught on and was officially adopted by the Buena Vista.

BVU Fight Song
Beavers fighting with our spirits high,
With our colors brightly streaming.
We fight with valor and with dauntless care,
Let us shout it everywhere!
FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!

Beavers fighting, out to win the game,
For our teammates, let us SING!
We'll FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! for the school we love,
For BUENA VISTA ALWAYS!

Words and music by W.B. Green, 1941

Other colleges with the Beaver mascot.....
Babson College (Wellesley, Massachusetts)
Bemidji State University (Bemidji, Minnesota)
Bluffton College (Bluffton, Ohio)
Buena Vista University (Storm Lake, Iowa)
California Institute of Technology (Pasadena, California)
Champlain College (Burlington, Vermont)
City College of New York-City University of New York (New York, New York)
Minot State University (Minot, North Dakota)
Oregon State University (Corvallis, Oregon)

As far as the urban legend part....well I'm still doing some checking to find the truth on that....

No one has even mentioned that Eddie Haskel was never very nice to the Beaver either. ;)

Well, the South Carolina Gamecocks are a SEC conference team, and the only non-conference opponent they play every year are the Clemson Tigers (my alma mater!). Believe it or not, they have to play each other every year by state law!

I've lived in South Carolina for the last fifteen years, and I can't recall the Gamecocks ever playing against any team called the "Beavers". Also, the Carolina announcers NEVER call their team the 'Cocks - it's always "South Carolina" or "The Gamecocks".

Reminds me of "Son Of The Beach"
