Do people tip anymore?

Having once worked in the service industry I usually tip well, unless the service is absolutley horrible. I think todays me-generation only value how they can get money... not what they consider waste it in things like tipping. By the time you know if they have left a tip, you have served them and they have eaten. They know it too.

20% (almost) without exception, unless the service was really bad and I am sure it was the waiter/ess' fault. I usually round up.

I found that it fluctuates. Some days were really good, others really sucked. However working one night on the weekend more than made up for any piss poor day I had during the week. It will pick up. Don't let it get you down. Penny pinchers are out there. But you will find ones who will go above and beyond and really surprise you.

Yes, there was the guy who gave me $7 on a $15 meal. I near fell down - but he said thanks and walked out. My first impulse was to chase after him and tell him he made a mistake - then my greedy nature kicked in!

I worked for many years in the service industry, I can relate.
I never go by % when it comes to tipping, though. I go by the quality of service. I am a gracious tipper, regardless. I've even had several pizza delivery guys stand at my front door in shock, when I tell them to keep the change. I've been on both sides, and can appreciate the service.

I dont' do an exact amount for tips, I just use those figures as a base point. I've left more, and once I left a quarter at a really expensive restaurant. We had a gift certificate, and let me tell you - did they treat us like we were lowlifes - placed us in front of the kitchen door, and gave terrible service. SO I tipped what they deserved - and then made a point on the way out to let the manager know exactly why we had tipped so badly. It's the only time I have ever done that, and I kinda felt guilty - but htey were so rude.

I'm 21. I tip. The state I live in 1/2 the time (NH) has 7% meal tax, so my friends and I usually double the tax and then add a few extra bucks. I have left no tip, and once I left a 25 cent tip, but both times were exceptions to the rule and very well deserved. I don't know anyone that routinely does not tip. Maybe it's just your area?

It could be. It's close to the end of the month - maybe it'll pick up once the welfare cheques come out.

I had a weekend away recently, and all weekend we had excellent service and the servers were tipped well for it. Then the last morning, we went to Dennys (warning Canadians - Denny's suck here!), and the service was terrible - as was the food. They took our syrup to refill it and never brought it back, the food was cold and almost inedible, they screwed up our order on a number of different things - thing is, we still tipped, but low enough that it was obviously a bad tip for bad service.

I am 33 and i tip approx 20% or even more if it's great service.....However, I have 3 friends that shocked the hell out of me the first time we went out to eat.....they told me they never tip...!!....Consequently I would leave the appropriate amount myself.....I also went away on vacation with 2 of them...no tips anywhere, including the maid !..

I think it was their upbringing..

I tip based on cost of the meal. 15% rule applies as a basis, if I get mediocre service 10%, if I get lousy service 7%. If I get shitty service I leave a penny and turn the "tails" side up.

I tried something I read about. As soon as I was brought the appetizer I tipped an approximate 15% of what I thought the meal was gonna cost.

True, even though I always tip just so I won't receive bad service next time. Unless the service is horrible, which it is sometimes. I had to run out of a restaurant with a group of people, before the waiters found out how little we tipped. Heh heh, revenge.
