Do people tip anymore?

Freya it is the me generation, given everything, and having no values for what they have been given. Ythey don't appreciate anything, so why appreciate some one else.

O-kay.

Generalization MUCH?

Kinda.

I'm 20. I have ALWAYS tipped my server/bartender. And if I am out with someone, if they choose to leave the tip, we usually discuss what should be left, and I am someone who likes to tip between 20-30%. Why? Cus I know what minimum wage jobs are like. They suck. And I know that these servers and bartenders are working hard. So I believe they should get recognition for it. And, I'm a student. I know that a lot of waiters/waitresses here in Victoria are also students. I understand money being tight, and if I can swing it, I'd like to give them even just a small tiny break. Maybe it's just me and my friends and family. But everyone I know tips like I do. My brother often tips up to 50% of the bill, in really expensive restaurants. It's just a thing that we do.

So don't go saying it's the me-generation, and that we have no consideration for people. That's just not fair.

Well it has been a while since I had a job where I relied on tips for the bulk of my income, but I didn't have any major problems with it.

In my bartending job, I liked that, to an extent, I could control some of my income. For instance, if it was getting close to rent day, all I had to do was dress a little bit sluttier, put a little extra effort into being flirty, and I could increase my cash flow no problem.

Here in London, and in England in general, service (as a general rule, there are of course exceptions) is on the whole crappier than in the US. People don't tip in bars and pubs and guess what? The bartenders therefore have no incentive to provide quick or friendly service. So, quite often, they don't. No motivation.

As a customer, I like the practice of tipping, because it gives me the option of rewarding exceptional service if I see fit to do so, or refuse to pay (or pay less) for inadequate or inattentive service.

I always tip. At least 15% for buffets, and more like 20% for regular service. I have had friends who were waitstaff, and I am well aware that minimum wage for them is ridiculously low, even lower than the regular minimum wage.

If the service sucks, then I stick to the 15%. Otherwise, I overtip.

We went to a nice place once, with a gift certificate, and sort of like your experience, Freya, the waiter was rude... We told him we had a gift cert. when we got there, and he said, "You DO realize that the tip is not included in that???"

I felt rather offended by his comment, we had given him no reason to assume that we wouldn't tip him. We did leave a tip, but it was only the 15%. What a jerk he was.

I always tip my server. I know a lot of my friends who don't tip. Tipping does seem to be a lost art these days. However there are sometimes exceptions, like as mentioned before where you really can't afford to tip. I have been in that situation a couple of times, but I always make sure next time I go there I leave a really large tip to make up for last time. I also notice that when I'm out with my non tipping friends they will see me tipping and then tip themselves. It's almost like they need a good kick in the arse reminder to tip.

Look at the bottom of the statement, there are those that are not that way, if you are one fine. As far as generalizations go look around at the broad picture, my observation is to them.
I too worked in the service industry and know the hard work and poor attitudes of those being served. Been there and done that!

I always give the lady a few bucks as she makes her way around the table, even if the GString has not come off yet. It is not the stripper's fault the DJ only gives her three songs to show the goods. She cannot give it all away right from the start. It would not be very professional and the other dancers would beat her up and leave her in a dumpster.

Tipping

Being a broke college student, I tip as much as I can. Gotta realize it just isnt in everyones budgets to be really generous. When I can though, I give extra.

I would love to tip you....

Frontwards or backwards...

Well it's nice to know it's not completely a lost art. I understand poor tips for poor service - I honestly don't think I provide poor service. We are slow enough that I'm able to take of what customers we do have very well. And Vix, although it was a generalization that doesn't apply to everyone, I do think in some ways bk was correct. That attitude is shown with the younger generation a lot these days. You obviously don't fall under that characterization and have followed examples set for you very well - but some don't, or those examples were not set.

Yes, you're probably right. But, I wonder, because they dont' even bother with a token tip, if they just don't realize about tipping.
I like tipping generously, but frequently I simply can't afford to - in those cases I make a point of thanking the person for their service, and telling then they deserve a tip, but that I can't afford to give one.

I've never left a token tip - I'd be afraid they'd think I was trying to make a statement about hating the service or something if I just left a tiny tip.
