Do Other Countries Have "American Cheese"???

I work in a Deli in the USA. I sell Cheese...quite a bit of cheese. One of the nastiest cheeses is "american cheese."

Do other countries have American Cheese?

What do Swiss people call Swiss cheese?
 
They got hundreds of different sorts with hundreds of different names.

You wouldn't shop there asking for "swiss cheese" without getting at least a huge grin.
 
The nastiest cheese is Limburger (SP?) cheese. American cheese is just processed something or other, how can it possibly be good for you? Just like hot dogs. Shit, now I'm hungrey for a cheese dog.

When I saw the title of this thread, i immediately thought of the ESPN commercial, you'd have to see it to know WTF I'm talking about though.

gouda is processed, isn't it? it says it is on the package i sell it in.

I never thought of American cheese as cheese.

It's in a class unto itself.

I have no idea what "american cheese" is.... from the way Chicklet has described it, I am wondering if i really want to know?
 
Ya Ameican Cheese would be produced in ya America. I'm guessing the Americans don't want to be blamed for Limburger, Stilton, Danish blue, Brie, Camenbert....Covering their cheesy asses. :p

I don't think real Gouda is "processed" in the same way that American Cheese is "processd" If what you're selling isn't in a Wax ball, it's probably an american made imitation Gouda.
 
I know they call it petroleum in France ... never seen it in Europe ...

Hey don't be knocking good old Velveeta...If it hadn't been for that I wouldn't have lived through my post college years!!

My favorite of all time is Cheese WHIZ!!!

And why do they call it squeezy cheese when it comes in a can?

By the way..I hear that some of that "gobment Cheese" is pretty good.
 
The first thing i thought of was 'Canadian bacon' which, I am given to understand, the Canadians call 'ham', since that's what it is.

If you're talking about melting in your mouth, cheddar doesn't. You have to put it under a grill.

Ducky, American Cheese, like any other cheese, can be good or bad. There's cheap, nasty cheddar. There's cheap, nasty stilton (yes, I've had nasty Stilton...improperly aged, improper seeding of the molds, etc). There is just no substitute for serious American cheese on a grilled cheese sammich, though.

Velveeta, btw, is NOT truly American Cheese (the type of cheese, not it's place of creation, obviously).

Gouda, when made properly, isn't "processed".

When I think of "American" Cheese I think of that weird, artificially coloured orange cheese, like cheddar. Strange that most people over there think that cheese is orange by nature.

Or, even worse, that cheese spray you can buy over there.

The Swiss don't call it Swiss cheese. There are dozens of cheese with holes in it - my favourite is Ementhaler.
