Congress bans word 'lunatic'. I think it's way too early to be doing such a thing. There are still quite a few lunatics in Washington. Banning the word isn't going to change that.

No, it won't change much, but it is a step towards greater acceptance and equality to those that suffer mental illness and disability. In my eyes it's a welcome change. :)

Did you read the article?

Rep. Gohmert had it right. There are other things that much more deserve - and need - their time and efforts. However, if they didn't take more than a few minutes to "discuss" the measure and vote on it, it is indeed a step forward linguistically, and thus shouldn't be *completely* disparaged.

It just seems to me that they should be thinking more about the fiscal cliff issues. This whole deal of deciding the wording in bills now explains a lot about why congress can't get anything done. They have no sense of urgency.

I heard yesterday that they "might" have to come back the day after Christmas, because they are running out of time. Do your so called constituents a favor. Save the noncritical decisions for other times. At least make us think you understand the seriousness of this crunch time so when you don't come together because of politics and just put a band-aid on it, we won't feel like we got reamed again, like we did last year, with the super committee.

To suggest that the task of finding a resolution to the so-called fiscal cliff is not getting sufficient attention in Washington seems to be good evidence of not having read a newspaper in the last month.

I think one could agree that the task is getting *attention* - but is it getting any effective *action?*

When DVS wants to talk about the fiscal cliff he approaches it by referencing something completely different -- some small victory for civil rights in this case-- and then he says "BUT WHAT ABOUT THIS MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THING WHICH IS SO MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR SMALL VICTORY!

That's called 'concern trolling.'

and also, classic passive aggressive Domboy behavior, which always gives me a smile so thank you for that, DVS.

Fine, sue me for word choice. If you want to claim that there isn't sufficient action happening on the fiscal cliff issue from the President and Congress then I suggest you read more or different newspapers.

Of course. I'm not in the habit of commenting on things before reading them.

I will admit that I am not as well versed in US politics as I should be, and was quite unaware that the fiscal cliff issue hasn't been approaching some sort of resolution, therefore my initial reply was made without this knowledge. I still stand by my initial statement; there is never enough time to get a sufficient amount done in politics. Any victory for civil rights is a victory that should be celebrated, regardless of the timing.

I can't say I agree with you DVS, but I can say I understand your POV.

The fiscal cliff is wingnut bullshit. It's been made real by a government that fell for the wingnut bullshit and caved to the wingnuts.

I want America back.

You won't get America back. That America is lost for good. I don't understand when you talk in riddles. The fiscal cliff is real and unfortunately, the people deciding what will happen are not going to be affected at all by the result. Trust me, they won't decide on anything and to keep the economy from going over the top, they will just apply another band-aid, similar to last year with the super committee. If that's what you mean by wingnut bull shit, I agree.

I'm sorry to be so hostile. Sometimes we just assume everybody is based in the U.S. But while deciding on more frivolous things like what words to no longer use in bills might be necessary, I just think it's kind of stupid to bother with it just now. It just rubs me the wrong way.

Could you explain the small victory for civil rights that I not so politely used as a stepping stone for my rant?

Exactly. Each side is posturing and blaming the other side. They have such somber looking faces when they go before the media, but I seriously doubt they give a diddly squat about the little guy as much as they would like us to think.

I don't understand why you're bothered by this DVS. This isn't a distraction from the fiscal cliff issue. They practically did this one in their sleep. It passed with virtually no controversy. It's not like it's the freaking Americans with Disabilities Act. It simply updates outdated language in the law. Great. Good. Next?

I could go into great detail about what bothers me in this, but you would probably get bored before long because it doesn't affect you in the same way. But it does bother me that they chose this time of year to decide something like this. They had to come together for the vote, even if they did do other parts in their sleep.

Like I said, it might not seem the same for you, but it bothers me that they would even take the time for this issue, an issue that has no deadline, when they should have been dealing with something that has a time deadline and a deadline that affects many.

Maybe a time will come when I'll explain more, but that is still up in the air. I'm thinking about it, but it's easy to misunderstand the intent behind some posts. So for now, I don't expect you to understand, just like Stella doesn't seem to understand. At least give me the benefit of the doubt while I rant. It helps me cope with the shit I see by our own government lunatics.

Why are we not dealing with the minutes used up by congressional prayers, hours and hours, volumes and volumes, taken as a whole?

Oh these people DO know how to waste time. Let's look at how.

They waste a lot of time but there's wasted time and there's wasted time. I don't complain when the wasted time doesn't affect me directly. When it does, I do my best to get that time back or at least find a way to vent my anger at what they do...and take names for the next time I vote.

How does the waste of time by opening every day with a prayer by a new rotating chaplain (I wonder about money) NOT affect you, but a change in language that humanizes several million Americans somehow does?

Oh some of these prayers, pretty freaking amazing. Including prayers to stand with and guide OJ Simpson in his dark hour. Shit you not.
