It has proven maddeningly difficult to develop new medicines for the end stages of the disease, despite the efforts of drug companies such as Merck and Johnson & Johnson.

It is also one of the very most expensive diseases for Medicare, costing $33 billion a year. Here is a link to a feature story I wrote on this growing and costly problem in 2009; sadly, things have not changed that much since, although there has been progress on the medical device front.
