So, did she do the swim unassisted?
Her team is claiming the currents helped her.

That's probably why nobody swims from Florida to Cuba (political considerations aside)

What made Nyad's swim remarkable was that she did it without a shark cage. Otherwise, she's just another escapee from Cuba -- she's like the hundreth person to swim those straits.

Current or no current I think it's amazing. It's a positive news story and of course some people can't handle that.

The Gulf Stream flows thru the channel so I suppose the current did help her. Duh.

Current or no current its still 90 miles.

Without a shark cage and without a wetsuit and flippers to be accurate. But yes she's far from the first person, that doesn't lessen her accomplishment though. Plenty of people have scaled everest.

I just saw a picture today of her after the swim. Man her face and neck were bloated. She was soooo sun burnt. 64 years old and can do that. You go girl!

If they were cheating an engaged in a collective lie, don't you think they'd be smart enough to slow the boat down?
Personally I think a current helped her. I also believe her team researched the most likely time for this to happen and plan trip accordingly.

That's not cheating, that's being smart. Nothing about swimming from Cuba to Florida states that you aren't allowed to find a current and run with it. I wouldn't care if all she did was lay on her back and float with the current. While not getting eaten by sharks or stung by jellyfish and only eating whatever she could handle under those circumstances.

Why have we become so cynical that rather than applauding someone's accomplishment we would rather nitpick and take away from it?

So what if sooo many people have done it before, so what if her team did their research and picked the right time, so what if she didn't accomplish world peace with her feat. It is still pretty incredible that this lady set such a challenging goal and achieved it. And the fact that she is 64 just makes it inspirational for me.

I agree. No one wants to give anyone any credit for doing anything these days without pulling them down. I can't decide if it's jealousy or just plain meanness.

I've seen a lot of praise for her elsewhere on the Internets. Funny that the only place I've seen her accomplishment put down is here on the GeeBee.

Speaking for myself, when I do it, it comes from a petty place within me. A resentment towards someone who can do something I never can. I'd like to be the bigger person. But most times, the pettiness comes out. I guess its an in built mechanism to help each of us cope with our own mediocrity.

Maybe so.

I think she's fab. I can't swim. And I'd probably be fucking knackered driving from Florida to Cuba and I'm 20 years younger.

Is Cuba too far for us to build one of those European underwater passages to? I know we wouldn't cus we're jerks but could we if we wanted?

I'm not saying she didn't do it!
I started this thread because I was curious as to what others thought, given that it's all over the news - both the praise and the scepticism.
For example, one thing reported was that she apparently didn't eat a thing for 7 hours.... which I find astonishing. Maybe one of her support people over-exaggerated a little? I don't know.
Anyway, I waa just curious.
Personally, I say kudos to her for doing it.... shows some major courage to attempt something like that at her age.
