dial up question

specific to my provider, peoplepc.com - they are a newer company, I've had them for several months. They're owned by earthlink.com, which is a bigger name. It's dail-up for $10/month, it's been fine.. .

but now when I got online this morning, it never progressed from the initial dial-in connection window to a homepage. My yahoo messenger automatically popped up and connected, but I had no way to open an browser window through the site... I went to a desktop icon I have for windows update, and got in that way...

Anyone else use this provider & have any ideas or issues???

New companies, especially new companies that provide a good deal, often quickly outgrow their facilities -- you probably just hit a very busy time when their server couldn't handle the traffic.

Ooooo...dial up? OUCH! Now I know not everyone uses the internet as much as I do but just for the convenience factor, I would HIGHLY endorse cable internet. It's that much more reliable and the speed factor makes it for me.

They use their own browser connection so that they can do a better job of caching pages. Both ends of the connection (the software you installed on your machine) and thier cacher have to work. Sounds like their side was down a bit. The regular IE path worked because it bypasses the caching (on both ends).

I'm one of the biggest geeks I know and I'm still on dialup. Some people really can't afford broadband. I don't even have a second phone line, though I do use Callwave.

Some of us use dial up because we trust it more, and can turn it off. When my isp is having problems I can dail into another. Some mof the companies I work for give me accounts to use too. I am comfortable with dial up for now.
I have been on computers a long time, and online since the 80's. I only have one land line which I use for the computer and a cell phone.
