DGO's New Unthread!

Thank you! I’m taking it one day at a time. I try to do more today than I did yesterday and that seems to be helping.

That's great! Your spirit is what will keep you motivated. Never let that awesome spirit of yours lose hope.

Checking in to see how you're doing. Recovery is slow, yeah, but it helps to know people care about you. What a terrible world it would be if I knew I could have made a difference by extending sincerity and blessings but withheld them.

Thank you! I getting better day by day.

Nothing to be sorry about because you've included some of my favorites. The day after Halloween is the worst day for teachers! No matter what parents do, kids manage to sneak candy out of the house and they have no problem sharing with their friends.

One year I caught a boy eating candy in class. I called him up to my desk and had him empty his pockets before having someone bring his coat to my desk so I could check his coat pockets. He was smiling the entire time. I had him open each piece of candy and chew it a couple of times before spitting it out. It was funny as hell but no one laughed. After that I rarely caught children eating in my room. His mother told me later that she thought it was funny too because she had told him not to take any candy to school. One of his friends couldn't wait to tell on him.

This happened in the 70s when corporal punishment was still being used. Back then kids were expected to follow rules. I had a no eating/chewing gum rule. After that day I rarely had a student try to get away with eating candy in class. Kids who had candy would write their name on their bag and put it on my desk.

Fast forward 20 years. For years I took points off for some grammar mistakes, especially the homophones, their, there and they're and the your and you're. I took off for missing end punctuation and for not starting your sentence with a capital letter. I was tired of the same mistakes and decided to lower your grade if your final copy contained such mistakes. It took my 7th graders less than a month to stop turning in papers with those mistakes. Other teachers thought I was being cruel, but I didn't relent.

I'll tell you about my nickname, 'the queen of mean' another time.
