Anyone use this? I'm thinking of beginning the shots soon, although I don't need them as a birth control method, and I'm curious about side effects and benefits to it.

i don't know about it, but I had a ham & provelone sammich yesterday. I'd sat that's close enough.

I had the usual, intermittent, regular spotting. It really sucked, because I basically always had to wear a pad.

I used the Depo shot..and gained weight..they took me off of it and I lost all the weight I had gained. Now I don't have to worry about anything;)

But in all seriousness...some meds have side effects on some people...you won't know til you try it.

Some people have no problems on depo. I had some really severe issues with it - depression, weight gain, prolonged periods, hair loss. It took me a year to get back to normal.

I thought this was a spoof on Deepak

Who/what the fuck is Deepak?

Do you guys have Depo Provera in the US?

Yes. Along with the patches, and that stuff they stick in you...oh shit what is it called......supposed to last like so many years. Damn I cannot think of the name this morning.

Oh the 6 things they insert subcutaneously?

From my doctor's nurse, I heard the most common side effects are spotting for about 3 months, some weight gain from water retention (although not usually more than 2-3 pounds), and a chance of acne if you're prone to it. But the booklet lists so many others. Since I'm not using it for birth control (I'm fixed), I am trying to figure out if the side effects are worth the end benefits.

Freya, my spotting lasted the entire year I was on it, never even getting better. I'm not sure what end result you're going for, but that was a real pain in the butt.

That would be Norplant.

Did you quit after a year? I'm trying to get rid of my periods, to be honest. Since I had my tubes tied they've gotten worse, and now I have mid month spotting too.

My wife took depo for birth control for 7 years. While she was on it side effects included weight gain, reduced sex drive, issues with depression that were exacerbated by the depo, and issues with cervical dysplasia that her doctor couldn't say one way or another if they were related to the depo.

When she stopped taking it 14 months ago she basically went thru a year of hell.

The advantages were that for 7 years she didn't get pregnant and didn't have a period.

When people ask we advise against it.

I had the same problem as Rubyfruit. I had to go off it after a year for my own sanity. The claims of being period free was a big draw for me but it never happened.

After stopping depo, I was diagnosed with cervical dysplasia and still continue to see a specialist.

Ack! They changed my life and not in a good way. I instantly gained 20 pounds (within 3 weeks), lost all energy, and was sick all the time. My periods stopped, but I started getting horrible PMS symptoms every month - I'd never had PMS before other than some cramping and bloating. I didn't have the mood swings, crying, bitchiness, etc. I thought maybe something else was going on, so I ignored the symptoms and got shot #2. OMG - not doubt after that and it took me two years to recover from 6 months of birth control.

My sister-in-law gained a lot of weight, but didn't have much of the other syptoms. My sister lost so much weight that she had to stop taking them. I only know of a couple of women at work who hove no noticeable side affects. I'm damn happy for them.

In all fairness, I have has some sensitivity to all types of hormone altering B.C. but the shot was the worse for me!

Good luck! :rose:

hmm, this is not sounding very positive at all. Doesn't anyone have good stories?

I'm so tired of the bullshit with my periods since I had that surgery - I'd really just like some relief from that.

I went off it after a year. I just couldn't take it anymore. It also took me a year for my cycle to resume any semblance of normalcy.

I hope you have better results. The lure of no periods played a part in my decision to take it too.

Gawd.

I'm sorry I ever played on this thread.

I've never had a period - I cannot imagine what it would be like to have one...I'd be lade up for days in bed.

Sorry Freya, I have to weigh in on the bad side as well. I took it after having my daughter. The depression was monumental. Damn. Gained 20 lbs as well. I went off it after 2 shots.

I had my tubes tied 3 years ago, and yes, my cycles are worse. No spotting, but the cramps are awful. I just take some Aleve and snug up to a heating pad. Its freakin worth it to not have to deal with birth control. I keep thinking "menopause, menopause, menopause" (I'm 40)

Hang In, Darlin', I hope you come up with your answer.

I finally had a hysterectomy because I could not deal with the shit anymore (painful periods). It was all done internally and the healing time was short and not external scars. It was the best thing I ever did. I didn't realize how sick my periods were making me. I was sick and in pain for 3 weeks out of every month. I was tired, my immune system was weak from dealing with constant pain, and it wasn't getting better. I put theoperation off for an entire year thinking that because I didn't have any thing "life threatening" that I should not just cut out part of my body. One day in October in 2000, I said "This is fucking enough!" I had the operation in December. My health improved right away and I have not regretted it since. I always tell women, if you are done having children and it's an option - GO FOR IT!

I considered Depo as a birth control option almost 3 years ago- there is a thread somewhere in the "How to" board about it with lots of horror stories at that time. I remember even men from the board posting horror stories about their wives and daughters using it.

I also did research on the internet before I decided against Depo. WAY too many horror stories out there about it. I also found some women who love it, of course. Obviously, it can't be bad for all women or there wouldn't be a market for it. BUT, the thing that scared me the most was a post I found somewhere from a woman reminding us that after the first shot, you are stuck with the side effects for the 3 months that the shot lasts. Even if you have a bad reaction, there isn't anything you can do to change it other than not get the second shot 3 months later. I didn't want to risk three months of hell to find out if I liked it or not.

That's my concern - the 3 months of effects. The nurse at my doctor's said if you can make it through the 3 months, you're usually gold. She's been talking to women there because she's thinking of going on it too - and most seem to like it. But she said there's more than a few who stopped it after only one shot - so it makes me wonder exactly how bad it is.

From what I read, the depression is only a factor if you're already prone to it - same as the acne, but the weight gain, I am definitely prone to, and I'm actually more worried about that than the spotting. I really don't want to gain back all I've lost - especially with summer coming up. (How conceited is that? :) )
