Depo Provera

Only One Problem My Way!

But It Was Enough Ta Stop Taking The Shot.

My Sex Drive Just Quit, Like None, Nada, Gone, I Thought Never To Return Again, Even After The End Of The Last Of The Second Injection And Into A Year Afterwards:mad:

I However Did Not Have A Single Moontime Or Any Spotting, No weight Gain Or Any Other Horrible Side Effects.

Try Making Friends With Yer Womb:D I Have A Thread About It Here, But You'll Have Ta Search Far Back! LOL

I've never been on it, but I had a friend that did... that's a thread from some time ago that I had asked a couple questions about it. Just keep asking around about it, I'm sure you'll eventually get the answers you want. But in all honesty, I wouldnt use depo, ever, and that's all because of the different stories (mostly all bad) that I've heard from it being used.

I have had two different experience with depo. I took it when I was twentyone. Use it for two years. It was fantastic! No side effects, no periods. No PMS, no cramps, no mood swings. I would have recommended it to anyone.

Tried it again at 28, sadly not with the same results. Gained thirty pounds in the first three months, had normal periods along with breakthrough spotting. Horrible PMS, severe mood swings and absolutely no sex drive. I stuck with it through two shots, and it took me a year after that to get my normal cycle and normal self back. Sorry, have to weigh in with the negative as well.

Norplant, in my opinion is much much worse.

Hmmm. I wonder if they reformulated it during those years. I'm always on the lookout for good BC besides condoms, but I have yet to find any.

Well Freya, both my sister's use it and love it....Honestly while I don't need the birth control benefits the lack of a period does sound better and better....I asked them about side affects, they both said it was minor for them, a little weight gain that's about it....Neither of themhad spotting at all....My youngest sister did have trouble with acne, but since has it under control.....

My .02 cents.....

;)

Thanks April - yours is the first positive response on here.

Can I ask the women that gained weight whether you were especially active during that time - I'm wondering if that would make a difference. And since my doc said weight gain was a result of water gain, did any try diuretics to help get rid of it?

Actually, I was more active during the second run than the first.
I was working out twice a day, and on a strict diet. It should have been impossible for me to gain weight, but I did nonetheless. It wasn't water weight either. I did retain water more, but that wasn't the bulk of it.

I did Depo two different times, for about the span of 3 shots each time.

The first time I was on it was right after our oldest was born, and I didn't have any side affects, except my period was completly gone. I didn't have weight gain, or loss, I didn't have a bitchy attitude, I didn't lose my libido.

The second time I used it, I didn't gain weight, but I couldn't lose it, either. I was more irritable, I lost ALL libido, I was bitchy towards my husband, etc.

I noticed it, but didn't attribute it to the shot until my last shot wore off. Almost within days of when it was supposed to wear off, my libido shot through the roof, my bitchiness left, and I wasn't as irritable. I started losing my baby weight, as well.

So, it's not only different from person to person, but also from time to time. I had no affects the frist time, while the second time I was a 'hormonal bitch'.

Oh, incidedntly, there is also a 1 month shot now, as well, so if you are worried about the '3-months of side affects', you may want to look into that one, as well.

Freya-

I was on Depo for about 2 years.... didn't have massive weight gain right at the onset, but more so over time, so its hard to determine if I was just eating worse or if it was an effect of the shot.

My acne was awful but I am prone to it. I never had a period, never had any spotting or anything like that after the first 3 months. I have a hard time with Oral BC pills.... they make me crazy! Bitchy, moody, etc.

My affect was more flat with the Depo - less ups and downs... my libido was lower, but then again, I don't know if was life circumstances or the shot that did it.

Now that I'm au naturel...... my libido skyrocketed, my acne is lessened, and i've dropped some of the weight I had put on in that period..... but I can't contribute it ALL to the Depo.

My roommate is also on it, and has been for over 10 years now. She can't take Oral BC without vomiting profusely, and does have some acne issues, but has NO weight gain problems (she's about 110 pounds and eats like a pig!) with the Depo. She hasn't had a period for as long as she can remember.

She tried to go off of it, tried Ortho Evra, the BC patch - and had a hard time with it, but its a medium hormone-level BC. Do you have bad effects with the pill? or just don't want to take something every day? If you don't have problems with the pill, you might want to check into the patch.

I can't take the pill because I'm over 30 and I smoke, and as the shot has no risks associated with that, it's safer for me to use. I never had any trouble with any BC pill anytime I was on them, so I'm hoping that I won't have many with this either. Thing is, I'm down to about a 23 day cycle anymore, I have horrendous cramps and sore boobs with my periods, and if I have sex for a week after stopping, I start to bleed again. And the last 2 months I've had spotting mid-month. So frankly, I'm tired of the damn things, and since I have no hope of relief without either getting cancer, or waiting 20 years for menopause, I'd like to eliminate the crap if I can.

Gilly, I don't think that shot is available in Canada yet. We have a little more stringent rules for new drugs to pass before release - so it may not be out for a while here.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Ortho Evra--the patch. I have had nothing but wretched side effects from hormonal BC until now. It is so great.

1. You don't have to take a pill everyday.

2. There are no irreversible side effects--by this I mean if you are on the shot, you suffer for three months until it's out of your system. Get sick? Just pull the patch off.

3. If you want to train your body to skip periods you just keep changing the patch every week (as opposed to having three weeks on and a week off). Women have been doing this with the pill for years...they just start a new pack when it's time to take the placebo pills.

4. Most women report not having sexual side effects.

Check with your doctor about the risks with smoking. It is my understanding that ALL HORMONAL BC has risks with smokers. Be careful, Hon.

I think the patch may be a better option for us period-sensitive women. And I believe it is now available in Canada. *crossing fingers*

If I remember the commericals for the patch here... I think they mention something about not smoking while on the patch.

hmm, this is not sounding very positive at all. Doesn't anyone have good stories?

I'm so tired of the bullshit with my periods since I had that surgery - I'd really just like some relief from that.

I'm on it.. And I have nothing but good things to say about it. I did not have any increase in acne, I lost my periods RIGHT away, I haven't had PMS at all, no decrease in sex drive (probably in increase, if anything), and the only iffy thing is some weight gain... however, reduced mobility from my car accidents is what I would credit most of that weight gain to.

I HAVE noticed, however, an increase in my craving for protein.

There are no risks for women over 30 who smoke with DP, but with almost any other hormone based birth control there is. I don't think we have the patch here yet either, to be honest. We have the pill, the shot and the implants - that's all I've ever heard of.

PB, you can't just have a hysterectomy unless you have a fairly serious medical problem that necessitates it. I'd love to have it done, but there's little to no chance of it happening for me. They don't perform major surgery that removes a huge chunk of your body just because you're inconvenienced by monthly period issues.

Freya, a couple of things.

There have been several threads about Depo Provera over the past 6-9 months. Do a search and see what turns up.

I posted extensively about my bad experience with it. A period that lasted 6 months with dramatic clotting problems and tremendous mood swings. My daughter is on it and has experienced weight gain and super PMS side-effects. I would NOT recommend depo provera.

You should look into the new patch that's just come out. It sounds much more promising. It can't hurt to ask your doctor about it.

Once when I had some problems with debilitating mid-cycle cramping, a doctor recommended a procedure that was a modified hysterectomy. I'm sorry I don't remember it's name and I declined to have it done, but it may be something for you to research. Instead of removing the reproductive organs themselves, only the LINING of the uterus is removed. The result is no more periods, though you still have all your hormone-making equipment still in place and fuctioning.

I took Depo Provera shots for about a year after the birth of my daughter. Eight years later I am still regretting my choice. I have been trying to get pregnant for 6 years with no results. I have had problems with weight gain, mood swings, and polycystic ovarian syndrome. I have had very few period in the last 6-8 years but the ones I have had were not normal. I have had spotting, heavy bleeding accompanied by partial complex siezures and lately I have had periods that go on for weeks and need oral progesterone to stop the bleeding. All these symptoms are a result of the polycystic ovarian syndrome. Consider your choices wisely. Of course I am just one opinion, but if I had it to do over I would have considered other options. :(

I must be one of the lucky one's

I was on depo for about 5 years. I spotted for about 5 months, no weight gain. Periods stopped after the spotting ended. No PMS and no side effects. It actually increased my sex drive. Considering I was and am single, not sure that was a good thing. lol

I quit depo for about 1 year just to give my body a break from it Periods came back as normal and after a year I started back up about 5 months ago. It has been a wonderful experience for me and I am thrilled with it! I have no plans to go off it again.

I was 28 at the time I had my son and in very good health. I got the first Depo injection while I was in the hospital. I figured I was going to be bleeding irregularly for a little while anyway - so why not? I stayed on it until my husband and I separated 3 years later. My periods ceased after 6 months... I gained some weight, but no more than being on the pill. I had no other side effects whatsoever. Either I was a perfect candidate, or I adapt well to things. Once off it, it did take a whole year for my period to come back... not that I was complaining.

What I learned from my OB/GYN, the drawback to not menstruating was an increased risk of developing osteoporosis... I have had a bone density test recently, and I am just fine.

i took the shots for six months.. that is two say, i had 2 shots, once every three months before i had my hysterectomy. i didn't have any adverse side effects from them.. far less than i actually had from taking the pill..

My experience with depo is similar to all the others posted here. I have use it 4 different times with 4 different outcomes. I used it first in high school with great results. Then stopped using it to get pregnant after I got married. The drawback was it took me a year and a half to get pregnant. I got 1 shot after the first baby, 1shot after the second baby and 1 shot after my last baby. It took over a year and a half to get pregnant each time. It hasn't been quite one year since my last shot and my cycle is so screwed up. So, I guess what I'm saying is it really screws with your body. I also gained alot of weight that I'm having trouble getting off.
This may be unrelated but, I never had a problem with depression until after the second shot. The doctor says that my Bi-Polar Disorder was already there but, I think the Depo affected me.

Freya-Sounds like you are fighting the same battle that I am.

Read this webpage and see if it fits you. I believe I suffer from this. I had clockwork periods. Easy periods. After I had my tubes tied (almost 8 years ago) they have progessivly gotten worse.

PM me if you want more info.. I'll see what I can find.

You know, I had my tubes out about 16 months ago, and thought most of the things I was going through were normal.

After reading that site, I am now wondering, as I have noticed several things that had never happened before, but that I didn't associate with my tubal at all.

Thank you for that link, FG

You had your tubes taken out or tied?
