To the contrary, that's how you tell who is a real leftist: Do self-ID'd socialists consider them so, or not?
The point is that cultural liberalism does not a leftist make. You might be all for racial and gender equality, all for gay and trans rights, all for DEI, hostile to teaching creationism in the schools, hostile to private ownership of firearms, etc.; but you're still not a leftist if your economic politics are laissez-faire.
