That was a scary little game, Elli. I expected another 3-0, 3-1 game, not a nail biter where the Dutch were on their collective back foot for the first hour.
Once someone finally explained the offsides law, it finally made sense!
Still not a fan, but once the quarter finals start, I'll pay more attention. I can watch pretty much any kind of competition when it reaches the knockout rounds.
Question for you soccer types: why the hate on the US from you guys? I have friends big into soccer, and most of them are like that.
Reports out of Brazil surfacing that say CR7 has been warned that if he continues to play on his injured knee, it could be career ending. He ignored doctors' advice in game 1. They go on to say (unconfirmed) that he's out for the rest of the tournament.
i am thinking i could manage the Spain team and do better than they are at the moment. They really arent at it.
A lot of the pros do roll around far too much but a lot of the impact injuries hurt for a few minutes, just like when you stub your toe. I think when you are going at the pace they are any little knock takes you off balance. It doesnt help when you aren't expecting an impact, like in rugby/nfl. If you know its coming its easier to take.

Most unfortunate. I am disappointed.

I think it may be something to do with the fact that football is what is on TV at the moment in the World Cup, involving hundreds of countries across the globe.
Unfortunately, US took the name 'football' and applied it to their own home grown game which rarely involves foot and ball and is in fact a weird version of another game, rugby. US had the nerve to call their 'football' league winners 'world champions' when they were just about the only country playing the game. The use of the word 'soccer' only serves to make things worse as the current game on telly is the original game of football and the American version is not. Football is football in just about every country globally, apart from North America.
Don't shoot me as the messenger but that's how it is. Totally agree that many top football players these days are overpaid prima donnas who roll around like they've been shot, whereas many other sportsmen (and women) take real hits in rugby or, dare I say it, NFL, yet get up and get on with it.

I backed Spain at major finals for many years and they always let me down ..... then I had several decent payouts when they finally came good. Despite this seasons Champions League final being an all-Spanish affair I thought they were a team on the wane and so it has proved

Do you think the manager was under pressure to pick big name players instead of players that are in form and playing well for their clubs??
Its been an issue for England for years i believe and thats why they havent done as well as they should.
There is this also. When I first started playing soccer, the first thing coach told us was "This is football. Not that american crap! " lol!

pffftt! So what else is new!![]()
It's not quite the Boston Tea Party but it's a touchy subject![]()

Spain is starting to remind me of the NY Jets.![]()
I think the Germans will win but I simply hope the US advances to the next round.
Yea I'm like that with baseball, basketball & hockey. and then it depends on which teams are in.
I've been thinking about this and I've come up with a few of my pov's.
Outside of the us, soccer is THE sport, totally embraced by all the nations and it's what they do since before they could walk. It's a matter of national pride. Not so in america. So playing for Italy would be i talians, playing for Sweden would be swedes, playing for Brazil & Mexico would be brazilians & mexicans like that. Playing for america...well you're not so sure.
Watching americans playing soccer is like some country outside the us trying to play football. We see the NFL trying to export the game outside the us. Not much success there.
There's something else I thought of but can't remember right now. Got an eye on the match.
