Defining Moments

Hmm... in no particular order:

The murders of Indira Gandhi, Olof Palme and Shimon Peres, the Tianamen massacre, the explosions of Lockerbie, Challenger, 9/11 and Oklahoma, the first Iraq war, the devastation of Dubvrovnik, the genocide in Rwanda, the Estonia disaster, the tsunami, Chernobyl, the release of Mandela, the fall of the Berlin wall, the orange revolution in Ukraine, the "dog parade" protests in Belgrad, the end on the Pinochet reign...

...damn, there's a lot happening in the world, isn't there?

Wow, thanks L. So many memories there, and all of them tucked away in my failing memory banks.

My brother: "Who are they collecting for?" (On tv several people staggering under the weight of a large blanket filled with coins by the watching football crowd.)
Me: "It's for Aberfan."

Pictures never to be forgotten.

A few moments I will always remember:

- The OJ verdict, when all but three of my high school English class, including the teacher, all the girls I thought I liked, and all but one of my friends (but not me) abandoned their lesson just to watch it. All came back disappointed in the extreme.

- Standing on stage in my first grade school play as the Archangel Michael, decrying man for being enslaved to his needs and riches, drawing my sword and waving it about to add personal flair. The audience and my co-stars (including the girl who was playing Raphael, the Angel of Healing, who would later become my first kiss, and the boy who was playing God, who lived a very profound life and would later die a tragic accidental death at a young age) were all proudly smiling at me.

- Creating an informative mockumentary play on medieval knights that parodied them along with my entire 8th grade History class, their talents, their relationships with me and each other, and earning an A+. I also cast the class clown as a drag queen, turned the guy who almost never spoke up into a training tool, made the guy who "ran the show" among the class my butler, staged some mock jousting and swordfights with the misunderstood outcasts, publicly humiliated myself in front of everyone, cast a girl to whom I had earlier sent spurned love letters as my most notorious torturer and her bitchy best friend as her handmaiden, plugged our resident art prodigy's great work, and wrote/directed/starred in the entire script myself. It was a great forecast of what I would do later. To my classmates and teacher, if you're reading this, thanks for making that so much fun.

- The first time I saw Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Peaceful Warrior, Fellowship of the Ring, the Passion of the Christ, and Unbreakable. All great movies that provoked interesting emotional reactions in myself and the rest of the audience as we found common ground.

- The last time I caddied for my dad. I still have the scar on my head from the golf ball that hit me. I also remember that he didn't want me there, and am glad to know why.

- Meeting Scott Kurtz at a book signing, proudly dissing him even though I love him, then smiling as he laughed it off and signed my books.

- The first time I posted an erotic story on the Net and had it well-received (Fear, Lust, and Vanity). Also the first time one of my stories was mentioned on this board (X-Men 3: Additional Aftermath) and I decided to de-lurk.

- Getting thrown out of a place I loved long ago for a series of stupid things I did and hope never to do again.

- Found friends and kindred spirits in many far-apart places, and grew to love them, smiling as I sorted out the true from the false, the mature from the otherwise, and continued to live.

- Leaving Taiwan in 1995 as Mainland China started test-firing missiles at them. And a few days ago, when North Korea did the same thing directed at Japan.

- Working security at Wal-Mart for 12 hours on the afternoon of 9-11, and not having one thing go wrong despite all my fears.

- My graduation from high school. Enough said.

- The first erotic story I ever read, recognized as such, and enjoyed, which I purchased from an airport bookstore while a teenager and still have.

- Shaking hands with my past inspiration Greg Weisman.

- Seeing a limosuine at a gas station in Bastrop while on a road trip last year, finding out it was ZZ Top, wondering what they were doing in such a small town, debating meeting them, then deciding "nah, never mind," and driving away.

- When I bought my truck in April 2001, how effectively I was sold by the inexperienced.

I love the Billy Joel song too.

I don't know if you'd call it defining, but the first big thing I remember from early in my life was Nixons resignation.

I was born in 66, so I wasn't very old as this was happening, but I still remember all of the talk about it. My mom was watching the resignation on TV, and I asked what the big deal. She tried to explain that he was the president and he was quitting his job. I distinctly remember saying "What's so important about that? People quit jobs all the time." :D

I remember when Elvis died, but it wasn't an impact on me. Ditto for Lennon.

The first big moment was Challenger. I can remember exactly where I was and what I was doing. The same for WACO, Oklahoma City, and 9-11.
