Defining Love

I feel the same about my father.... that also is thrown in my when I least expect it!! Today is but one more reminder.... one never expects their parent to call them an asshole and hang up on them.... ~sigh~

[taking a moment to appreciate what's been shared here by Cate and Liza]
I appreciate the earlier message Cate. To be clear, I believe my wife loves me unconditionally but I admit I don't always feel I deserve it.

And reading these most recent messages made me think back ... I remember that sense of being I now associate with feeling loved unconditionally when I was with my grandmother and grandfather. What a blessing they were and still are even though they departed years ago. Even in those darkest moments I know my heart carries the gift of love from them.

I guess what I am trying to get to , is since we are all flawed human beings, then maybe the "goal" of unconditional love needs to be adjusted somewhat.

I have no answers, just question after question!

Cate, I believe that it is precisely because we are flawed that we should aim to be givers and receivers of unconditional love.

I'm not sure what other goal makes sense for me than to try to improve my life - and, for me, improvement means moving toward perfection. So if unconditional love is something like a perfect form of love, then that ought to be a part of the life's goal.

Just a thought.

Socrates says, "Love is the consciousness of a need for a good not yet acquired or possessed."

In using the word "good" Socrates implies a perfect essence, but I don't like the definition he uses. Nonetheless ... it also seems as though it has some truth to it, don't you think, however unflattering its connotation?

I am really beginning to see that I do not understand or know the definition of "unconditional love".

I can love others, in spite of their flaws, with no problem. However, I am thinking under the wrong definition of unconditional love I think. Knowing we are flawed, but worthy of love nonetheless, didn't fit within the definition from which I was pondering. Time to throw that one away....banish another ill concieved notion!!

Given what has been brought forth here, unconditional love is more than attainable, it is everywhere. But now that makes me wonder....isn't it supposed to be a higher form of love??

Now I'm taking my own brain for a ride here..... off to get something accomplished, that I do know!!

DLL.....welcome home from your trip....I'd never kick someone when they're down.....especially them there Yankees...although it was terrific to have won!! It was a great weekend in Boston.... and beating them just brought a cheer to so many here! Not that I truly care one way or the other.....just fun to see how everyone gets so excited here!

Ok...more pondering done....I think I retract my earlier statement of redefining unconditional love..... I believe it exists but my thought process has somewhat reverted to my original thought. To me unconditional love is not merely loving another flawed human; but loving them despite your hurts, inflicted by them unto you. Loving someone who has hurt you to the soul. To me unconditional love can not be easily attained.....yes, strive for it, but I just don't think it as common. Romatic love does not fit this definition for me, it can of course develop to unconditional love, as can any love, but unconditional love seems to be reserved for true greatness, if you will.

And then again maybe in a few more hours I will have come to yet another thought!! Sorry to drive anyone nuts!!

Not that I could ever have stood up to ol Soc in his day, but this seems to be a rather self-centered definition of love. No action involved other than seeking something for the self. What happened to the concept of loving another as a verb?

Yes, DLL, presumably you have flaws. Liking the Yankees comes to mind as a first candidate. I'm sure others exist as well.

However, watching your team lose in Boston is merely the acceptance of reality. No love involved. Only pathos.

So you think that "when one truly loves one self" it becomes possible to love others unconditionally? For a Yankees fan, you're almost half smart about this stuff.

Perhaps I am incapable of unconditional love given what you have implied. I am not speaking of a romantic love in this instance. My meaning came more from those who have abused another; meaning me. I can not love them unconditionally, for to do so would perhaps put my ability to love others in danger. It could create a void within me where love should reside.

I am not saying that unconditional love does not exist, I know it can and does. However, I think we are projecting it be far more accessible then it really is in reality of the human condition. It is rare. Just that simple. I know my character defects inhibit me in many areas of life, some rather inconsequencial, others of greater meaning. However, this condition of being human can not be traded away. This is why I believe unconditional love is reserved for greater love, or greatness, if you will. Maybe someday I will take the forgiveness I have given these people and move to a higher level of love and enlightenment, but to think I will ever be able to love them unconditionally would be wrong for me to contemplate. I am only human, and this condition will never be "medicated".
