Dear Diary.

Dear Diary,

I broke down and had pizza for dinner last night after not having had wheat in my diet since the beginning of February. The effects were scary.

I swelled up like a balloon, my joints all are stiff and swollen. My body temperature shot up with a fever and my skin itches. I am having the difficulty breathing as my airways are constricted due to allergic reaction but that isn't the scary part. When I woke up earlier today I was deeply depressed to the point where I'd say I was crazy. My emotions were out of control and I was having suicidal thoughts, manic depression and mood swings from hell.

I'm over the worst of that but it lasted for quite a while.

Sooo, to answer the question permanently as to whether I have a gluten intolerance vs. a gluten allergy I would say that I have the more severe allergic reaction.

This is called anaphylaxis and it can quickly be fatal. If your airway constricts just a tad more (it's *not* a highway - just a little back road, ya know!), you can literally suffocate to death within minutes. Some people also have a reaction that causes them to pass out at the same time they start having trouble breathing, which offers them no opportunity to call 9-1-1 or for other help.

Please be very careful about gluten. It's obvious that it's not for you any more.

You're absolutely right. "Intolerance" is actually a mild allergic response - YOU don't have that. You have a severe allergy to gluten, and need to eliminate it entirely from your intake. Check with your doctor - it might also be a good idea to have some epi-pens available in various places around your home and other frequent surroundings just in case you accidentally ingest some gluten... and *always* have one with you if you're going to eat at someone else's home or away from your own home. Gluten appears in an astonishingly wide range of foodstuffs.

What he said. And

Dear Diary,

Please point Betticus at this link for basic information about a gluten-free diet, and then this link for lots and lots and lots (currently approximately 2.4 million) of google links to sites with both general and specific information on gluten-free living.

Thank you!

All I wanted was a lil bi tomboy subbie of my very own to pet and cuddle and give spankins to.

BETTICUS!!!!

That was such a silly thing to do! What if your reaction had been worse and you couldn't have gotten any help?! You could have killed yourself!

Mister, you steer clear of the gluten and you do what Winnie said: you see about getting an epi-pen in case of accidental ingestion.

I'm disappointed in you mister. What would us lil subbies and the lil hammies have done if that had been worse?!

You've got to think about these things now.

Remember, the original Sir Winston (Churchill) was often referred to as "Winnie," both by the public and the press. 'Twas an affectionate, loving nickname.

Yeah, well all it makes me think of is the song.

Winnie the pooh, winnie the pooh . . .

*hides behind harmony*

Dear Diary,

I had enchiladas for dinner, ate too much and now I'm feeling the need for a nap.

Dear Diary,

One of the faeries was found unconscious near the hamster cages with a broken wing and a bump on her head. The cat looks guilty.

Those faeries! If they didn't dress so temptingly, that poor kitty wouldn't have been overcome with dustlust and attacked that faerie.

It's really her own fault, after all.

:p

Does the cat have any faerie dust around his/her mouth or paws?

Not that I could tell, I was too busy making lil wing splints. Those books I have on lightweight airplane construction and glass fiber layup techniques really came in handy. She has a lil cloth bandage wrapped around her head and her lil broke wing is all done up in lightweight carbon fiber reinforcement. She won't be flying for a few weeks and she's been recuperating in the huuuuge hammie cage way up in the top tower. The other faeries have been bringing her lil bits of chocolate and I got her a thimble full of port so she's all happy.

The hamster is livid at the cat, I put her in the exercise ball and she chased that cat into the laundry room. She's being a faerie bodyguard and has shredded her a bunch of bedding so she's all comfy and warm. Last time I checked on her the hammie nibbled my finger pretty hard.
