I've been trying to better my writing lately, and I realized that I wasn't very good at "slice of life" stuff: just a character's everyday activities. I felt like I was rushing the plot at the expense of character development, so as a writing exercise for myself, I wrote a full day in the life of one of my previous characters (Esther Zhang, from The Day the Earth Stood Nude) without any plot development at all, just focusing on characterization. I think it helped, and I want to try more in the future.
If anyone else has the same problem, I recommend this exercise. And if you're interested in what I wrote, you can find it here: http://liquidmatthew.wordpress.com/2012/09/27/slice-of-life-1/
