DARK AGE AHEAD by Jane Jacobs.

Jane Jacobs is dead, but she was a liberal Canadian with some interesting ideas about how America and Canada will fail and slip into a Dark Age. Once you amputate the tender-minded twaddle from the text, much of it makes good sense, which is unusual for a liberal or a Canadian.

The gist of her argument is: Society is mostly retards who struggle to cope with the world, and actively oppose anyone who has a better mousetrap or a remedy for a problem. Consequently they fuck each other whenever they can, and are easy prey for charlatans, politicians, and corporations.

Charlatans, politicians, corporations, and your friends/neighbors conspire to destroy culture by destroying the family, wealth, and institutions.

Jacobs observed that no one gets an education anymore, they get credentialed. Education is forever, but a credential has a short life-span, and your employer can fuck your livelihood by influencing if you get your credential or get it renewed. Colleges and schools work hand-in-glove with business to make your diploma meaningless.

Corporations create bogus organizations that are Trojan horses. The bogus organization seems to champion popular social and environmental issues, but actually exists to frustrate people and make what the corporations sell more appealing. Jacobs cited public transportation as an example. Crappy buses and weirdo passengers make people want cars. Cities get grants to help pay for the bums to ride, and car manufacturers make the grants possible via their influence in Congress.

A Dark Age just means a lack of faith or shared purpose. In that sense we've been in a Dark Age since World War I.

Jacobs defined Dark Age as the time when few (if any) members of a culture have any memory of what practices, customs, and standards made the culture great.

She defined a great culture as one having strong families, good education, adequate resources, local taxation control, affordable housing, and enough jobs for everyone.

When she wasnt sputtering about "WE ARE THE WORLD," she made good sense.

There's always a dark age ahead, and always people who claim it's imminent, and they always have very convining evidence of it. They are pretty much always wrong. There's a "pessimism bias" that runs deep in us.

Jacobs was correct, its happening to North America.

Pessimism is the correct mindset for it.
