I clleared my history and rebooted my computer- now some webpages won't load. I IMed a couple of people who frequent those pages, and they're not having any problems.

Yes, yes, I know it's probably something extremely simple to fix, but I'm an ignoramus when it comes to this stuff. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to fix it?

Sometimes the problem could do with how much memory you have available on your hard drive. I had that same problem once but I'm no computer expert either.

Do you get an error page or does the browser just sit there waiting for the page to load?

I rebooted and I'm still having the same problem. I have broadband and I just signed to aol with no problem. I can access the webpages through aol, but no IE.

The browser just sits there waiting for the page to load- no error message.

Do you EVER fucking make sense?

OK, try this:

My Computer>Control Panel>System/click on the performance tab/click on virtual memory

You can adjust it from there. I hope this works.

Problem = AOL
I don't normally use AOL. I am using it right now because it's the only way I can get certain pages to load. They won't load with IE.

As you might already know, your History (and Cache) are files of websites and images that you've already visited, stored on your hard drive. The reason for this is simple: your computer can load the images and files much more quickly from your hard drive than having to re-download them each and every visit to the same page. When you clear your History and Cache (two separate actions), this erases those files or the links/addresses to where those files are stored, and your computer then needs to download whatever sites/files you visit.

The computer might not immediately know where to find those files, since it has recently been retrieving them from the hard drive. This is especially true for links/files stored in your Favorites. You need to manually tell the computer where to load the pages from.

To do this, you should manually type in the address of the site you wish to visit. For example, instead of clicking on Ebay (or whatever) in your Favorites list, click in the "Address" bar at the top of your browser, and type in "www.ebay.com" and hit the Enter key on the keyboard. This should load a new, updated page from Ebay.

Also, if it has been a while since you've last cleared your History and Cache, there is the chance that your computer is not loading the most recent version of that page. For example, if you visit a site that gets updated with information every day, your computer might load a page that is stored on your computer from the previous day, instead of the CURRENT day's page. To solve this, all you need to do is "Refresh" the page. If hitting the Refresh button on your browser doesn't work the first time, then try holding the SHIFT key on your keyboard, clicking the "Refresh" button in the browser, and then releasing the SHIFT key. This should request a fresh page from that web server, providing you with the most current information.

To sum up:

- Try typing in the address of the page manually, in the Address bar at the top of your browser, or typing in the site name (www.yahoo.com) and then clicking the appropriate links to the information you actually want (Yahoo! Games, for example).

- If you notice you are not receiving the most current information, try Refreshing the page, using the Refresh button in your browser. If this doesn't work, try doing a SHIFT-Refresh.

Hope this helps... Good luck!

Have you tried using a different browser?
You could also try empyting your cache, temporary internet files.

Virtual Memory = No

Virtual Memory is not your problem. Virtual Memory settings CAN become a problem with the computer, but it is not the answer for the problem you described (failure to load web pages).

If all else fails, call Tech Support. (that's why they're there, free, and 24/7)

Thanks FJ, for clearing that up. I have that problem with my computer at work. I don't know why but usually resetting my VM gets it to reset. Go figure.

might not hurt to do them again..

you should do them when you delete a bunch of stuff off the computer..
