D.I.Y. Advice needed

Take the nail in one hand.. hammer in the other.

Hold nail to wall.. hit with hammer. (avoid contact of fingers holding nail.. with hammer)

If you hear a zapping noise.. and feel a shock.. then you've hit a wire. Move nail to different spot and try again.

Good luck :)

There are nails designed for hanging pictures, and are made for the weight of the picture. None of these nails will go far enough into the wall to damage anything.
You should use a hammer, if you don't need to use too much force, the plaster won't crumble.
There are also other hangers you can use. They are sold in kits designed especially for hanging pictures, and cost a couple dollars.

tap along your wall, you should be able to hear the difference between tapping a hollow area and tapping your home's support beams, there isn't any wiring directly between the wall and the support, so when you find a bit that doesn't sound hollow, you're safe..

you should be safe anyway....electrical wiring ususally runs up the Side of the supports and along skirting rails..not accesible from the interior side of the wall unless youre being silly and drilling on a sideways angle..as far as i know..hope this helps.

4laterer,

I have never hit a wire in a wall, and I've hammered lots. I'd suggest doing a query at ask.com, because most likely they will be able to provide you with picture references, and perhaps a more detailed methodology than those of us who take such things for granted might.

Or, you could just get a boy to do it for you.

:D

I love a man who's not embarrassed to admit - in mixed company,no less - that he can't do a DIY project.

You're a rare breed 4laterer.

I think 4laterer is a female.

Heh..who'da thunk it. Sorry 4laterer, I still admire you for publicly admitting you can't hang pictures. :)

If there's a high horizontal beam or trim along the wall, put the nail in that and run a wire down to the frame. It looks classy.

re: wires .
You can buy metal detectors to find where hidden wires are
but there is a cheaper rule of thumb>

Never put in a nail above or below a socket or light switch,
wires tend to go either up or down.
