I am starting this new thread to address a trend of TV (especially cable) to capitalize on BDSM and it's shock value.

One of my favorites shows is Comedy Central's Insomniac with Dave Atell. He is a comedian who works the comedy clubs and is an insomniac. SO after his gig, he takes a camera and visits the city he happens to be in. He goes anywhere and everywhere.

The show is on late at night, and is first shown on Thursday night, but it is repeated several times.

Last Thursday, Dave was in Cleveland, OH, and he visited a body piercing parlor. It is a must see.

They toured the facility, and they talked about the different kinds of body piercings.

They also have a body suspension theatre group. ANd they showed some folk getting suspensioon piercings.

Dave always visits the fetish clubs if the city has them. Last season, he visited The Hellfire Club and Paddles when he was in his home city of New York City.

Has anyone else seen current TV shows with cedible BDSM themes?

TV? Not much there, BUT........

I have seen a couple of shows which gave a fair reading on BDSM, but far and large most do not.

Believe it or not, the one who gave it the best treatment was one night at a hotel watching the history channel and on comes a show on the Marequis De Sade. It was very good, while not graphic, it didn't pull any punches either.

Otherwise, not much, oourse I don't have cable at home (way too rural for that) and if I had a dish, I wouldn't go outside and do things. This is bad enough.

Do you think it can be shown as is, without judging? I don't know, but would like to see what happens.

Last night I was watching a re-run of a "Real Sex" episode on HBO...

I got to thinking about this one group that has a portable dungeon that people have come to their homes for parties etc... how much fun would that be!

valuable thread, but ...

I disagree on giving insomniac a positive rating. Dave Atell and CC present it more as a "get your freak on"-type of thing, not a viable lifestyle or culture on par with the rest of society's many facets.

Sure, the show doesn't out-right criticize or castigate the people in the clubs/parlors, but the whole point of the show is that the "weirdos" come out at night, and by going to bed early- this is what all you "normal" people miss.

As for HBO- they have always done a half-assed job of presenting sexual variations. They will give you a semi-documentary on hookers and johns from "Hunt's Point", but they really don't get as in-depth with the BDsM culture as they would with an "America Undercover" or one of there other "legit" documentaries.

There was a film out a few years ago- independent and underground- that got mentions online and in a few alternative papers. It was sort of a chronicle on a neighborhood or group of swingers in Sthrn CA. Can't remember what it was called, but Ifilm had clips of it at one time...

I have actually considered attempting my own documentary on the subject, since I am a bit of an independent film buff/videographer. Any thoughts?

First of all, disagree all you want. I like the show. If you do not like the show fine.

The whole purpose of this link is for people to post what they observe on TV. Opinions are fine.

There are other thread what discuss film, and other mediums. Or if you like, you can start your own thread.

It is Comedy Central, my favorite channel. I makes me laugh, sue me.

So please do not hijack my thread. Thanks.

Oops, I had a typo. I meant to say credible, but I did not say fair.

What I meant by credible is that it shows a real situation.
Whether it is a fair depiction or not remains to be seen and is a matter of opinion.

I think we all have to decide that for ourselves.

they were probably too tired from all that kinky stuff!

Recently there was a show on TV over here in Aus (Aus Sex Survey) that had a nice, informative piece on BDSM. The brought on a member from the Hell Fire Club, and she gave a small re-count of what is carried out, a little insight into the BDSM world, however, they did cut her segment rather short, which was a shame.

A more 'informed' piece (although still lacking) was given by a Female sex worker, who also gave some explanation into fetishes etc.

Sadly tho, both pieces should have been longer, and more in-depth, still, it is a start I suppose.

At least they were not negative, which is usually the case here in the states.

That particular episode is quite old -- certainly not from the current series. So far they've not repeated anything from that episode. Pity.

Actually, the one from last night was all new. And they brought back the Domme from a previous episode. But they didn't delve much into BDSM in this one. I think this one was more about the underground lifestyle... stuff like online chats, online video, male escorts, etc. More shock value. But they also played BDSM in a bad light by having that husband (Dom) being kinda of a whacko. Not a whacko because he was a Dom, just plan whacko. Most Doms are not like that. And the subbie that was doing all the killing was definitely... well, her elevator didn't go to the top floor.

About the most sane person they have had on CSI that is involved with BDSM is the Domme that seems to have Gils number.

I hope they keep bringing her back.

That's TV for you. I use TV for background noise mostly.

I am one of those that is not so sure
1) that bring this lifestyle out in the open is good for it
2) that TV is good for anything

I also have it on as background noise and the news
