I was looking into a new favorite story ping today and realized something. Some are probably going to think "Duh!" but others are likely baffled, so I'm going to pass this on. When you see multiple "favorites" pop up from the same member, the reason is that your control panel alerts don't distinguish between favorites and lists. Multiple ones back to back means the member has added that story to one or more of their curated lists.

Enough people have discovered this feature that if you download your statistics, you'll see that your list numbers are now outpacing ( if not vastly outpacing ) your favorites numbers. Lit may want to look into adding this number to our control panel by default, rather than requiring a download of the statistics, because I think this number is going to become quite relevant in the future. Likewise, it would probably be helpful if the control panel pings distinguished between the two.

The favorites list is a free-for-all that can be difficult to digest when it gets large, but someone who is curating lists can provide a descriptive title for that list and actually categorize stories they enjoyed. They can also pull stories that have a secondary theme that doesn't necessarily coincide with the category into a list and allow anyone who peruses them to discover stories they might have otherwise never found. If it hasn't happened already, some of these members are going to gain followers through well-curated lists, and their lists will become significant sources of readership.

This is no longer a random feature with little relevance. It's something to keep an eye on.

As long as I'm wishlisting with regards to this feature, I'll point out that the ability for a list creator to sort that list into an order that is displayed by default could make it more useful for authors with many connected stories. There are cases where connected stories don't fit well within a single series, and having the ability to provide a timeline for multiple stories through a curated list could be extremely helpful for authors and readers alike.

My work as Dark is a a prime example. I've been posting both historical and "present day" stories in Danica's world. Linking them all together into a single series would be less than ideal even if I didn't have a giant hole in the middle where I haven't written the liberation of Egoria yet. If I could create two lists with one pre-liberation and one post-liberation in timeline order, it would make it far easier for me to present the timeline to readers by linking those lists from my bio.

Thank you for solving that mystery, it's been bugging me for probably close to a year

I knew that already about lists and favorites, but it had not yet dawned on my simple brain that one could make multiple different lists for different purposes. I just assumed the choice was between a "favorites" list and "to be read later" list. This is a very useful feature that I've never taken advantage of, so thanks for bringing it up.

How many of us have such lists? I don't, but I think I will.

I assume stories can be on multiple lists?

The what?

Lists?

I hope my name is not on zee list?

If it is...how do we see said list?

I just played around with it and it appears that you can, although you have to add the story to each list individually.

@THBGato curates some great lesbian lists
Thanks Jackie! :giggle: I've started adding a link to them at the end of my stories.

Sadly, there's no real way to know if other readers make use of them. I've had a handful of nice messages about them from other writers, and one regular reader has put a plug for my lists in her profile, but ohher than that, who knows? @Manu would there be anyway of adding view counters to lists?

I had seen users adding my stories on lists a few times, but never made the connection to the recent "double favorite" pattern. For example, I know one user compiled such a list for "nude on stage" which includes a couple of mine.

Although, now that I stop to think about it, I'm really not sure how I came across that list. And it points to what I believe is the current problem with lists, which is that (to my knowledge) they aren't really surfaced anywhere. Unless you already know user X keeps a list of "nude on stage" stories, how do you find it?

I enjoyed scanning your lists. "Christmas Lesbians" made me smile.

I have a few private lists where I can sort Read Later stories by genre category. I’m not sure if authors get a “favorites notification” when I add stories to a private list though.

Well I, for one, have found them very useful. Thank you so much for making them!

How about people link lists here that they've made or found that they like?

Is there a way to find all of the lists that include a particular story?
I don't think so, especially since lists can be set to private. You can get a count from your Works page on your publicly available profile, though.

It would be a good feature for readers to be able to see what public lists a story is on. Likely more useful then the current 'similar story' thing
