COVID impacts

There's actually a possibility of a dip because of schools/sports/after school activities being cancelled. Writing/reading erotica with the kids home?

Could end up depressing numbers rather than increasing them.

Or... use it as a home-school option combining Sex Education with English Lit + the added benefit of discovering a possible career path in multiple online porn opportunities. The story output could be record breaking! SO much negativity :D

Roche’s cobas SARS-CoV-2 Test

Roche’s cobas SARS-CoV-2 Test to detect novel coronavirus receives FDA Emergency Use Authorization and is available in markets accepting the CE mark

- First commercial test for SARS-CoV-2 will enable expedited coronavirus testing to meet urgent medical needs
- Testing on widely available, high-volume cobas 6800/8800 will significantly increase available testing capacity
- Roche expedites test development to support urgent need for patient testing during pandemic outbreak to avoid a further spread of the virus at an early stage of infection

Basel, 13 March 2020 - Roche (SIX: RO, ROG; OTCQX: RHHBY) today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the cobas® SARS-CoV-2 Test. It is intended for the qualitative detection of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 disease, in nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swab samples from patients who meet COVID-19 clinical and/or epidemiological criteria for testing. Hospitals and reference laboratories can run the test on Roche’s fully automated cobas® 6800 and cobas® 8800 Systems, which are widely available in the U.S. and around the world.

The CE-IVD test is also available in markets accepting the CE mark for patients with signs and symptoms of COVID-19 disease and living in affected areas where the SARS-CoV-2 virus is known to be present.

“Providing quality, high-volume testing capabilities will allow us to respond effectively to what the World Health Organization has characterized as a pandemic. It is important to quickly and reliably detect whether a patient is infected with SARS-CoV-2,” said Thomas Schinecker, CEO of Roche Diagnostics. “Over the last weeks, our emergency response teams have been working hard to bring this test to the patients. CE-mark certification and the FDA’s granting of EUA supports our commitment to give more patients access to reliable diagnostics which are crucial to combat this serious disease.”

The widely available Roche’s cobas 6800/8800 Systems, which are used to perform the cobas SARS-CoV-2 Test, provide test results in three and half hours and offer improved operating efficiency, flexibility, and fastest time-to-results with the highest throughput providing up to 96 results in about three hours and a total of 1,440 results for the cobas 6800 System and 4,128 results for the cobas 8800 System in 24 hours. The test can be run simultaneously with other assays provided by Roche for use on the cobas 6800/8800 Systems.

Upon approval Roche will have millions of tests a month available for use on the cobas 6800 and 8800 systems. Roche is committed to delivering as many tests as possible and is going to the limits of our production capacity...

Fauci just finished telling the media at a press conference that the U.S. will very likely have a spike in cases as massive Covid-19 testing is brought on-line.

Thanks 'tyrsail' for both posts. Good news! At least we can begin to get a decent understanding of scope of this thing.

I'm more used to seeing "SW" as an acronym for "sex work", so this amused me.

Bramblethorn, the idea of anyone paying me for sex work is pretty amusing.

I like to think I'm in pretty good shape for my age, and small children and dogs don't cower in fear at the sight of my face, but a pretty boy I'm not.

That, and M'lady would likely geld me with a rusty file if I actually pulled it off.

"...COVID-19: U.S. at a Glance*

Total cases: 1,629
Total deaths: 41
Jurisdictions reporting cases: 47 (46 states and District of Columbia)

* Data include both confirmed and presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 reported to CDC or tested at CDC since January 21, 2020, with the exception of testing results for persons repatriated to the United States from Wuhan, China and Japan. State and local public health departments are now testing and publicly reporting their cases. In the event of a discrepancy between CDC cases and cases reported by state and local public health officials, data reported by states should be considered the most up to date..."

Yeah, and as of today (not updated on the CDC website, cuz they don't do that on the weekends)
Cases: 3244
Deaths: 60

Source: Washington Post's Coronavirus Map

Last updated: March 15 at 2:20 p.m.
Map created from data collected by Johns Hopkins University
This map does not show 67 additional cases from the Diamond Princess and Grand Princess cruise ships who are being treated in various places across the United States.

So, in two days the number of cases almost doubled, and the number of known deaths increased by half.

which is exactly what the epidemiologists said would happen, and why they're so worried

Phhht, minor details — give it go, you may be surprised and find a whole new world of opportunity :D (Seems I read recently that there's a hot market right now for geldings )

Be thankful you're not in Ireland.

They are shutting all bars and clubs from now until after St Patrick's Day!

Yes, buzzwords. I'm pretty sure I used one in a different post...

I couldn't remember the phrase when I was responding to TP, but I was curious as to why "embedded code" is more hands on. Thanks for the explanation.

Think of it this way. Your washing machine or refrigerator has a chip that runs it. The code is embedded in the chip, you can’t change it the way you can on your Laptop. I had a friend who wrote embedded code for appliances and she tried to explain to me once.

We have a patient who tested positive for COVID-19 here in town now. No history of travel, so they're trying to retrace where she's been and who she's been around.

As of today, I'm working from home full-time. I was doing a couple of days a week anyway, but now I don't know when I'll next see my team in person. I suspect work is likely to pull the plug within the next week and send everybody home anyway.

I'm used to it, but we have several newbies who've only been with us a couple of months, and part of my job is keeping an eye on them to make sure they're okay. Gonna have to do all that online now.

I'm thinking of writing more. Just too stressed to do it.

Cancelled school until the beginning of April in my district as of Friday. Work has had plans to transfer all our work to other divisions in the event of a shutdown for about three weeks now.

That's assuming any of them are open. I pity any division that is open ( including us ) if any of them start closing. I've been through it, and it's living hell. I'm assuming that if more than one goes down, they'll probably shut them all down for PR reasons, and that even one confirmed case in house will be enough to trigger it.

Thankfully, I'm finally in a position where being off work for two or three weeks unpaid wouldn't be an overwhelming issue. If I have to, I can utilize the 3+ weeks of paid time off I have remaining as well. Plenty of convenience expenses I can do away with if it becomes necessary ( Netflix and the like ) and eliminating the 70 mile daily round-trip to work would be money back in the budget, which was planned based on gas prices before the plunge.

I already had a few supplies just from buying bulk, and I've been slowly building up more. Fortunately, I just bought TP that would normally last us two or three months right before everyone freaked out. Nothing else other than hand sanitizer, bleach, and sanitizing wipes has really been wiped out around here, so I've had no trouble getting a little bit at a time during normal shopping trips.

I live in the sticks and rarely leave the house except to go to work, so I'm already socially distant.

I've been on a short vacation to New York. The night I arrived, Trump announced the travel ban from Europe. The next day, Broadway closed (so my trip to see the new version of West Side Story was cancelled). Now the restaurants are due to shut. I'm heading home to the UK tomorrow, and I'm hoping all flights aren't cancelled, so I can get out of the country okay.

If the government instructs all those over 70 to stay at home, how will I complete my sessions of radiotherapy treatments?

Sorry that happened... Hope you get a chance to come back and see a show sometime. Good luck getting back home.
I had my last restaurant visit for a while yesterday and sat far from anyone else. Tomorrow morning at 9am when the delivery-only measures begin in NYC I'll be doing that on occasion but mostly cooking.

If you can discuss this with you primary healthcare provider, perhaps it might be less risk for you to postpone the radiotherapy than to take the risk of exposure to the virus. As you know, age and general health of an individual play a huge roles in the risk.

I have been assured that radiotherapy, unlike chemotherapy, does not reduce the immune reactions. And that treatment for cancer will continue whatever other pressures there are.

That's good. But the problem may well be that older people do seem to be more likely to experience more severe reactions to the virus than younger folks. It's getting you safely to those radiotherapy treatments that's a worry.

I guess, if it were me, I'd contact the doctor and ask if postponing radiotherapy is safer than the risk of exposure caused by going out to the hospital. Since you're doing so well on the cancer front, they may want to prioritize keeping you safe from the virus at this point???

For example; We've already been contacted by healthcare providers who have canceled some non-emergency visits.

Best wishes to you and all the good people over there who are enmeshed in this event. ~ :rose:

My wife will be driving me by car and parking in a disabled car parking space. My contact with others will be minimal.

We have already discussed with the oncology specialist the balance of risks of attending versus delay. Her view is that if we delay the risks of the cancer recurring sooner are high and also the spread of Covid-19 may increase if we delay, thus making the treatment riskier for me to attend. If it is done now it should be completed before Covid-19 is eveywhere.
