COVID impacts

I count 48 on that map: 37 WA, 6 CA, 1 CO, 2 FL, 1 GA, 1 NY. But keep in mind that USA isn't doing a lot of testing; it's quite possible there are other deaths that haven't yet been identified as coronavirus.

Will the board Trumpettes please try to absorb this: If you don't blanket test for it, you aren't going to come up with a number for it. When you haven't started testing for it at all, in any realistic terms, which is (purposely) the case in the United States, you can have no freaking idea how widespread the virus is--and you should just stop making low numbers part of your discussion. Your president is purposely dragging his feet on testing so that the real numbers can't be there. He cares about his reelection status, not people--and not you.

You'll have to excuse sr71plt.

He suffers from an easily diagnosed condition that predates his terminal TDS.

It’s not that. The fake news is purposely playing politics and stirring hysteria using clickbait to get views, and the craziness from “former administration officials” doesn’t help at all. Anyhow, those last two comments are side tracking this away from ze virus and into politics and there’s another board for that.

Personally I think we’re doing the right think but we’re a bit behind. Should have cut all air travel weeks ago, not bothered listing to WHO because they’re increasingly dealing in politically correct fiction rather than reality, and just gone ahead and protected ourselves. That would have generated a media frenzy worse than we’re seeing now.

Calling it fake news is just as political a spin.
And I agree with you, there's a politics board if we want to go down that rabbit hole. Lets keep that there, regardless of our ideology.

 Politics is just a good way to break up longstanding relationships — this crisis too shall pass...

My latest concern is the growing number of elected officials (and their family members) popping up who have tested positive — or those officials who know they have been exposed. I would advocate strict isolation for government representatives. Imagine how much more difficult this could become if there is a fracture in getting appropriate bills/policies pushed through.

Well, all our non-med IT and admin people that don’t do actual medical or physical work here and who can WFH have just been told to do that from Today for the foreseeable future, until this is over. Smart move. My husband shut down his office and sent everyone to WFH from today as well.

When shit gets serious....

Traffic on the freeways here in Silly Con Valley has been a lot lighter than usual because of all the WFH. My company is encouraging everyone who can to at least try it. I do embedded code, which is pretty hands-on, but I’ll try to do it as much as I can manage.

Yes, it’s really good to move as many people as possible to wfh. Works for IT and businesses like my husbands where you can do most work online and with video conferencing. I’d guess the hospitality industry is going to nosedive, as well as airlines and retail. People are just going to put that stuff off. I saw some article from Canada that said something about making sure everybody could cover their housing, food and energy and medical costs, they’re doing some sort of package, which is an excellent idea. Because a lot of people are going to be idled. FEMA seems to be sitting on their asses.

Oh, I initially thought that WFH meant "what the fuck happened?"

I've been working from home for over twenty-two years now. My commute is about forty-five feet from bed to computer. I put about 3,000 miles a year on my car.

FEMA needs an emergency declaration from the President, which happened yesterday.

The House passed a bill with money in it for that sort of thing, plus some guaranteed sick leave. More info here (article from Forbes): House Covid-19 response bill

The Senate is taking the weekend off. Maybe if enough people call Mitch McConnell he'll have them come back before Monday to vote on it.

And since you looked at it three more people have died in WA. The map is undated in real time.

As for the flu deaths, that was an estimate, source was I can't find it anymore. But if you take the number of deaths in in the last two years on the graph you 138 a day.

And the Covid-19 is being estimated as almost twice as contagious (spread ratio 2.3+) as regular Flu (spread ratio ~1.3), and at least twice as deadly. And, there's a readily available vaccine against Fly, none in sight for Covid-19 inside six months at the very least. So, the potential is there to be bad plenty.

Nice work, if you can get it. Some high tech can do that, too. Some can’t. And some can sorta-kinda do it, but it slows things down. They booted us out early on Friday because one person *might* have it, or maybe the flu. If they test positive, I guess we’re all on quarantine. But I’m a SW guy in a silicon company - a lot of what we do needs to be hands. So things slow down quite a bit if we need to do that.

Sorry, ‘SW’?

SW = software
I'm pretty sure anyway. Java had mentioned earlier about their job being hands on writing code (or maybe debugging code, I'm not sure)

{they're apparently on online right now, or I'd let them answer.}

I guess we all have buzzwords we think everyone knows. Sorry!

Yeah, SW is software, HW is hardware. And I write embedded software - the code inside products like digital TVs, wireless routers, and such rather than applications you’d buy yourself.

And no, I don’t write in Java - I just really like coffee. :D

Yes, buzzwords. I'm pretty sure I used one in a different post...

I couldn't remember the phrase when I was responding to TP, but I was curious as to why "embedded code" is more hands on. Thanks for the explanation.

The problem with testing embedded code is that you need the product it runs in and whatever specialized equipment is used to verify it’s working right. I have a “small” setup in my office that weighs more than I do, but I still need to test some things in the lab.

The weird thing is that I got into SW in the first place because it was easier to play with at home. Then I chose a specialty that makes that nearly impossible without a full lab setup. D’oh!

Please, no need to apologize. We all have our own list and there's rarely a Rosetta stone lying around when you need one. Actually, shame on me for being so out of touch.

In my case, it came out of nearly thirty years on the firing line (literally) in overseas work, permitting me to retire early on a very nice annuity to do work where I don't have to worry about it needing to put food on the table.

Good for you! I’m at the stage I could retire early, but it’ll be much more comfortable if I work just a few more years.

Though at least I (now) don’t need to do a lot of work related overseas travel. It was fun at first, but it can get awfully wearing, can’t it?

FEMA seems to be sitting on their asses.

In a public health crisis like a pandemic, HHS (Health and Human Services) is the lead federal response agency, not FEMA. The U.S. president's action opens up some disaster funding, but HHS/CDC remains in charge of the response.

"...COVID-19: U.S. at a Glance*

Total cases: 1,629
Total deaths: 41
Jurisdictions reporting cases: 47 (46 states and District of Columbia)

* Data include both confirmed and presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 reported to CDC or tested at CDC since January 21, 2020, with the exception of testing results for persons repatriated to the United States from Wuhan, China and Japan. State and local public health departments are now testing and publicly reporting their cases. In the event of a discrepancy between CDC cases and cases reported by state and local public health officials, data reported by states should be considered the most up to date..."

I'm more used to seeing "SW" as an acronym for "sex work", so this amused me.

There's actually a possibility of a dip because of schools/sports/after school activities being cancelled. Writing/reading erotica with the kids home?

Could end up depressing numbers rather than increasing them.
