in order for us to get comfortable with the new governmental
normative control over our lives in order to keep us safe.
Once given a power, government does not relinquish it;
they enjoy the power and we are complacently handing it to them.

Is this going to be the ruction now every single time a new virus comes out of China?

What I see in American massmedia is reporters and politicians using the crisis in an attempt to establish their power and dethrone their rivals.
They don't care about the economy or people's well-being, they care about sticking it to their rivals.

But I don't see that in Australian and NZ massmedia or politics.
Moreover, the argument of those particular health professionals & epidemiologists and those who support them, is that if we leave the lockdown till the last minute like Italy did, there will be more casualties and more economic losses.

That said, what the data is showing, is that countermeasures are working, as expected. If the optimism has merit, great, we will be out of this by June or so, and with a low number of infections (as percentage against general population), with no sure way of knowing what would happened in true "do nothing" case.

So I'm now catching up with the Pacifica news. (That's what happens when you live in an American headspace, you miss out.)
Things have taken a drastic turn over the last 24 hours:

New South Wales and Victoria, which have 469 and 229 confirmed cases respectively, are going in "lockdown" tomorrow (which is Tuesday the 24th for Australia).
Other Australian states and NZ are likely to follow soon.

For now, the 'lockdown' entails the closure of nonessential businnesses.
Convenience stores, pharmacies, banks, supermarkets, liquor stores, petrol stations will be semi-open), and most laypeople are advised to stay indoors.

People are advised to stay home, however, Scott Morrison stated semi-threateningly that more drastic measures are likely to follow. "Australians aren't taking the crisis seriously."
(probably to cover his back over the Bondi beach disaster, and the criticisms that he's more interested in the 'economy' than supplying hospitals with enough supplies, in anticipation of what's to come).
