confused over voting

Hi, I’ve submitted a story into the non-erotic section that has 4.78 marks from 18 votes and 555 visits but does not appear in the ‘top list’. Others have less visits and less points or voters so does anyone any idea why? Thanks, Ray

Not a clue. In the FAQ section, it indicates that the Top Lists are updated several times a day. In reality, I think it's rather less frequent than that. Assuming that your score didn't just jump above 4.6 or so this morning, your story's easily been up long enough to be in the Top Lists.

I'd suggest you wait another day to see if it assumes its rightful place among the pantheon. If not, send a PM to Laurel and/or Manu; you'll find their PMs as moderators on the "Site Announcements" thread at the very top of the Forum home page.

Did it just come out and pass the 10 vote / 4.50 threshold? ( or rather, whatever the lowest score is for the non-erotic toplist )

If that's the case, the toplists only update a couple of times a day. Your story should appear in the toplist as soon as the next update rolls through.

Otherwise, the code that generates the toplists does hiccup every once in a while. Your story may not show up for a few hours, a day, maybe a bit longer, but the conditions that cause the code to overlook a story never seem to last long. It will be there, vanish for a bit, and then reappear.

Thanks GnomeDePlume, After 19 submissions, none of which got close to the top list, I was all excited about achieving my aim only for it not to appear. Someone hates me, lol. I’ll watch it closely. By the way, if you like it a 5.0 wouldn’t go amiss. (me, canvassing unashamedly for votes, sorry) Ray.

If you're canvassing for votes on this thread, put a link to your story in your next post. We're a lazy lot.

Just view the first page of your story, right click the address bar in your browser, and copy. Then come back here, start a post ( or edit your signature from the User CP ) and paste the URL in. The forum software will automatically change it into a link.

In my experience

To get on the list wait for midnight or so.

To be moved up and down the list happens several times a day.


At least that is what it seems to be.

(P.S when you turn off voting for a story it only takes a few hours before it disappears from top lists.)

Hehehehe! I'm glad that I'm not the only one that happens to. I've learned to not get excited by the score based on early votes and not before the evil trolls get through with it. A small vote count is, statistically speaking, a small sample size and in my experience, those people that are my "fans" are usually the early voters. My most recent story started off at #1 on the top list. I think its down to around #40 now. It doesn't take many low votes to cause a huge swing in the score when there are only a few votes. As someone noted earlier, the trolls have gotten smarter and may not leave a 1 that will get deleted and may instead leave a 2 that won't necessarily deleted.

I noticed that my score recently got "scrubbed" and the score went up a little bit, but not significantly, at least not as much as I thought it would.

Anyway, a story gets the red H after 10 votes with an average of 4.50, but that doesn't mean you'll enter the top list immediately (or perhaps at a very low number).
