Hello. I have not been here in a long time. Is Weird Harold still around for help?

Anyway...

My mouse is driving me nuts. The scroll button is working in all programs except for any online uses. It is odd, it will work for a few days on my user name and not my husbands and then in a few days it is the opposite. When it is not working the my computer will not go into hibernation or energy saving mode. I did spill some water in it a few weeks ago and I opened it up to dry it. It is an optical cordless mouse. I bought another mouse but I am not sure how to uninstall this one. I did not see it on the install/uninstall menu. The mouse and the keyboard are using the same connection so if I get a new mouse do I also need a new keyboard?

I can't think of anything to help with diagnosing your problem but you should just be able to unplug your old mouse and plug in the new one without any software or drivers. There may be additional software that give the mouse more adjustability. For example I have a trackball explorer. It works just fine without any additional software but if I install intillepoint I can change what the buttons do and have much more controll over the mouse.
Your new mouse and old keyboard shouldn't have any conflicts as far as I know.

unplug mouse
reboot
plug mouse back in

should fix it

You typically don't need to install or uninstall any software to get keyboards or mice to work. And you should be able to mix and match the keyboard and the mouse from sets. A computer can take more USB keyboards and mice than one could possibly want. And the old PS/2 (round green and purple) connectors use separate plugs for the keyboard and mouse. You're old one was probably USB.

You didn't say whether the new mouse you purchased is the same make and model as the old one. I'm not sure if wireless mice and keyboards from different companies can work with others' wireless receivers. So if you were using a Microsoft cordless mouse and bought a Logitech one, they may not be interchangeable.

The new mouse you bought probably came with it's own base station (assuming it's cordless). Just plug it in and use the new mouse. If it works fine (try it for for a few days in case it was a software problem), throw the other one away.

It doesn't sound like it is a problem with the mouse itself, it sounds like a problem with the software configuration or device driver. The hardwre works the sme whether you're onlineor offline, but the drivers are often context sensitive so that the scroll button is interpreted differently by different programs -- i.e. it's how your browser is interpreting the signal from the mouse and not the signal the mouse is sending.

I'd start by reinstalling the software that came with the mouse if you still have the disk or just install the new mouse and its software (which "should" remove the old mouse drivers as part of the installation process.)

Another option is to look at the mouse for the brand and part-number and google to see if updated drivers are available online. search for <brand> <part#> and "driver" to find the right driver.

Depending on the brand and model of your mouse, you should be able to go into your device manager and click on the entry for "Mouse" and configure the buttons and scroll wheel to perform as you want it to. In the mouse control center for my Logitech mouse, there are several options for things like "scroll size" and "Setpoint/OS Scrolling mode" -- and the driver is user sensitive; changes I make in my username don't affect the other usernames for my daughters and granddaughters, they each have to be configured individually.

but my other two mice work fine with it

It sounds like a software/driver problem.
Has it always been like this or recently started doing it?
I would also look in the device manager for human interface devices and see if there is anything there. If so try reinstalling that.
See if you can find drivers/software for your new mouse and try installing that. You should be able to go to the manufacturers website and download any drivers and software available for the device for free.
Also look through the device manager and look for yellow question marks. If you are missing a driver that's how it will warn you.

You said the keyboard and mouse are using the same connection.
Do they both plug into a USB splitter or does the mouse plug into the keyboard and then the keyboard into the computer, or is it wireless or connected some other way?
If you have a USB splitter try plugging the mouse straight into the USB port. I have had conflicts with a USB splitter running an external hard drive and mouse and keyboard. Otherwise let us know your setup and maybe it will help.

This is not hard.

Load the cd that came with your new mouse and install the new drivers.
Re-boot with BOTH mice(sic) connected, only use the old one! Hands off the new mouse! (sicer)
Go into device manager as above and DISABLE the old mouse. It will have a specific name.

Reboot and your new mouse should be working just fine.

You then of course have to tidy up but thats another story!

I have a touch pad and wireless mouse on my laptop and they BOTH work at the same time!

your pc reboots nicely with out a mouse


failing that

reboot
follow those instructions, but replace the "-r" with a "-s" in the shutdown command

and turn your pc back on

stay away from Dell
one stop shopping is NOT your friend most of the time for PCs

It works in everything but IE. It will also work for one windows user and not another. It is not the user settings b/c the user it works for changes randomly.

what version of IE do you have? some of the older versions don't support scroll wheels. IE6 and above do.
