Locking and holding computers for ransom has become a common problem. The good people of the world need and depend upon computers. They are a simple fact of life.
Having our computers kidnapped makes life impossible. I think this is a paricularly heinous crime. I don't think humanity should tolerate this.
I think if you caught and summarily executed a few of these hackers, the problem would be solved.
I'd bet it would take fewer than a dozen to solve this problem, and that's a very small price to pay. These are evil sociopaths and they deserve a bullet in the back of the head chinese style.

The reason horse thieves were hung in the old west was because if you take a man's horse you take his entire livelyhood.

So, yes I would support this has a capital crime.

Exactly. It's such a despicable thing and it ruins our livelyhoods. A huge hospital near me is dealing with this right now. Apparently, the patient database has not been compromised. This must be a very hard thing to secure.

I have no problem with that.

No matter the country they reside in. TAKE THEM OUT!

Some of these guys encrypt the hard drives. So anything short of taking it to the NSA is not gonna work.

when they compnapped a hospital's network you might have been able to call them murderers.

Kidnappers are often murderers too, especially when kidnapping is a capital offense.

If you make compnapping a capital offense, then you might end up with a dead system after the payoff...

;) ;)

I love books. If it were possible I would have sex with them. Don't think I haven't tried. (There's a reason why I'm no longer a librarian.)

For reasons I prefer not to go into, I am not allowed to practice veterinary medicine, or go within 100 feet of a petting zoo. (Call this a free country . . .)

Can't you just take the locked computer to Best Buy and get it unlocked?

Do you really want someone from Best Buy checking out your computer?

Put the drive in an external housing, connect it to your laptop and format the son of bitch. It just a hunk of metal once it's locked so start over. I actually have a duplicate of my c: drive just in case. I take the locked one out, replace it with the duplicate and and I'm all set to go. Data is not on the c: drive. And the only time they get mounted it when I need to get something off them.

If you think ransomeware for computers is a problem, remember there are computers in eveything these days.

Nice car you got there...

Typing this from my office computer. When I got home last night my desktop was missing, and today someone delivered me a ransom note made of words clipped from magazines, and a mouse with a severed cord!

Back up, people. And if you get ransomewared, nuke your hd and put the backup on.

Suspect another of your personalities is your best bet.

I can see the point that if a computer hijack of a hospital system, public utility or such led to a loss of life there being a murder charge.

Have you ever met the average human?

Now, consider that half of humanity is below average.

eh i support people who have gotten repeatedly

you would think one time would be enough to be more careful

Well you could kill them if you found them and if they were in a country that felt the same punishment was needed. I would go for if they find you and you are found guilty than you can't use technology for the rest of your life. Make them wear a band that shocks them if they get near a processor.

Changing your behavior would mean admitting, especially to yourself, that you behave stupidly. People tend to put so much faith in securing their systems that they forget or neglect to secure their habits.

but how would i get my porn back, damnit!?!?

Wait, you can't back up porn?

I mean, sure, you might need one giant mofo of a backup drive, but afaik, there's no smut filter there.
