Hello, long time no see and all that.

I'm thinking of coloring my beard for the upcoming Halloween, but I don't want the color to stay in more than a couple days. Are there any coloring products that might allow me to become a true blue beard for just a few days?

If your beard is blonde, grey or red, semi-permanent staining is probably going to be an issue regardless of what sort of pigments you use. If your beard is dark, you might get away with it without any tinge.

If you use a light coating of hairspray and dust on some blue cosmetic pigment (eyeshadow, etc) that might work to give you a blue color without any permanent damage. The hair spray will act as a sealant and a sticky surface for the pigment to cling to. A second coat of hair spray on top should make it stay longer and prevent any runoff. Be sure to apply a thin line of petroleum jelly around your beard hairline to prevent any pigment from staining your skin. You can wipe off the jelly after application for a super-clean look.

Do a test run several days before and check out it's staying power and if you like it or not.

ETA: Apply it like dusting on fingerprint powder. Roll the brush in small amount of the pigment, roll/dot the brush across the hair you wish to tint. Work in very small sections and take your time. Practice it at least once before the big day to make sure you work out the kinks.

It's almost white (see photo in BDSM Café) so I'm quite concerned about long-term changes. Your technique has some promise. Thanks.

A mixture of dishwashing liquid and hydrogen peroxide might be able to get any lingering pigment out once you're ready to wash it off.

Fascinating. I know about the use of hydro peroxide for bleaching, but would never have thought to mix in some detergent.

The dishwashing liquid would mix with the hydrogen peroxide to act as an oxidant, removing not only the pigment but the hair spray in a highly effective manner. :D

I fucking love science!

Great point. You should consider starting up a web site with that name. ;)

Oh, get reel, we all know that's the same ole smelly fish. At first we thought someone had dredged up some GBer with the incredible pong it was giving off, but they travel in groupers, so we're onto you now!

Ok I'll bite. What's the costume that you need a blue beard for?

The colored beard is completely unrelated to a costume. I just thought it would be fun to color the beard so that it didn't conflict so much with the dark wig that I'll be wearing. For the record, I'll be an eighteenth century preacher, ready to sermonize about "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God."

Ah so really you're dyeing it for the halibut?
