Russia Warns West It May Change Its Stance on Iran

Russia may revise its stance in the Iranian nuclear talks amid tensions with the West over Ukraine, a senior diplomat warned Wednesday.

Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said, according to the Interfax news agency, that Russia didn't want to use the Iranian nuclear talks to "raise the stakes," but may have to do so in response to the actions by the United States and the European Union.

The statement is the most serious threat of retaliation by Moscow after the U.S. and the EU announced sanctions against Russia over its annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region.

Ryabkov, who is Russia's envoy to the Iranian talks, said that Russia considers the "reunification" with Crimea as far more important than the developments surrounding the Iranian nuclear program.

Russia has cooperated with the United States and other Western nations in the Iranian talks, but Ryabkov warned that its attitude may now change.

Romney has no backbone for this. He's soft on foreign policy and has the demeanor of a wet noodle.

No...we need someone with a crusty exterior.

We need McCain.

Russia can't afford a new cold war.

They have barely recovered from the last one, and this time they have a lot less resources than the former USSR. Add to that the fact, that China will go to great lengths to stay neutral with an affinity for the West. They love to ride that gravy train and are not eager to miss out on a steady gazillion $$$ flood because Putin has a cow over Ukraine.

Can Europe afford to have their gas cut off?

Neither can the U.S., and of the two of us, we're the least able to afford it.

As for barely recovered from the last one, that's hardly the case. They're more flush with cash now than they have ever been. Oil, gas, minerals, lumber, they're among the tops globally. Russia supplies fully 46% of all the nat. gas Europe uses. Even China is dependent on Russia for energy.

Might not look like the last cold war, but if it continues to throw its weight around like it has, why quibble on the wording.

Yes - way better than Russia can afford to stop selling it.

Europe has done without Russia before and can do it again. It will cost more but ultimately they will adapt.

The US economy was stronger during the cold war and has deteriorated ever since it ended. For the US the advantage of ending the cold war was improved security - not finances.

Russia might have a little cash saved up right now, but it can't feed it's own population without international trade.

Borrowing from the well-worn tactics of the RWCJ crew, it would appear that this thread (mine) and its title (also mine) were prophetic.

Told you so.
