Christianity.

Haha, except we ALL -- you know. Sniptastic.

I think it's because the men of the region are short, smart, aggressive, loaded with T, and exactly alike except for these little tiny differences. Salaam Aleikum. Sholom Aleichem. We must kill one another now.

Sometimes I think God is actually this 15 year old sneaking a beer and watching us all like someone watches, like Faces of Death, going "dude, dude, look that guy TOTALLY blew all those people up, haha." I've got serious doubts about just and loving and I'm certain about the totally inscrutable and mysterious part.

I get Jewish jokes more than any other religion because I've read most of the bible (minus numbers and leviticus - I'm not that much of a masochist), so I understand them more often. But some I don't get, cause other than netzach and malcah I've never much spent time with Jewish people.

Leviticus is stupid to people who like part 2, the whole point to people who like part 1.

So many right-wing Christians.

So few lions.

Dude, that's bad. Just my opinion. :cattail:

Yeah, pretty much. If I wanted to live by those rules, I'd probably pay closer attention and it'd be interesting. But I don't want to live by those rules, and reading them gives me a headache. It's worse than Walden Pond.

I think pretty much anything that involves groupthink is a bad idea. That includes (but is not limited to) religion, atheism, Warner Earhart groups and other cults, Amway and other pyramid schemes, economic and social strata, fraternities and labor unions, and even political parties.

It comes down to a cultivation of this us/them mentality, the mutual suspicion that always somehow erupts between different groups.

I really don't agree with this. Without shared ideas and principles and collective action or lobbying, women wouldn't have the vote, there would be no gay rights and working people wouldn't be entitled to things like contracts, protection from unfair dismissal and minimum wages.
Sometimes group thought and action is necessary and productive. Sometimes where, say, inequalities of power exist it is the only means to be heard or deal with an issue.
Perhaps in many cases its not the principles of the group that are the problem, but more the lack of tolerance or understanding from those outside the group who are ignorant, that creates the suspicion.

Sorry the trade unonist in me could hold out nolonger lol. That being said...I'll shut up now!
This thread is really interesting and I have enjoyed reading all the posts. I haven't commented because I am agnostic, but religion really interests me.

The only thing I dislike about religion is conversion.

Over all I think the major religions are good, much like government, I think there original purpose is to have large groups of people live together without chaos. The abuse of religion should not reflect this purpose.

Not all religions command their followers to actively convert, by the way.

Oh, yeah, my main beef with religion is when people try to convert me or make me live by their religions beliefs.

I understand that people trying to convert people is mostly an individual thing, and not mandated by the religion, but its still the main thing that makes me angry. Also people who think they know what's best for me, etc. I know that this is all an individualized thing, but it all stems from religion and it pisses me off.

Some sects of Christianity command people to actively convert non-believers. Some sects of Judaism (I am blanking on the name right now - big menorah guys...ummmm) actively try to "convert" non-religious Jews, but they're not interested in anyone else. As Jews, we are not commanded to preach and spread the word. It really varies. That's why I don't like lumping all religious institutions together. As I understand it, for example, unitarian universalists believe that we all believe in the same underlying God.

LIKE THE MITZVAH TANK!! Do you have that where you live? I wonder if I could find a photo...

There are these hasidic guys that drive around in a big RV thats blaring klezmer and they park on the street and hand out material about why you should be a jew. Gosh, I can't think for the life of me what sort of jews they are, but they think that once everyone on earth is a jew than a prophet will come or something... I don't really know WHAT they believe. But they are like a NYC institution, and they are really nice guys, and everyone knows what your talking about if you mention the Mitzvah Tank. I have friends who got to chatting with them and were invited onto the RV for wine and cookies :D Anyway, yeah, thats what came to mind.

Yeah, here's something about what they believe:

And I think that yeah, these guys might be the same people your referring to. Trying to get lapsed Jews back into the fold.

One time there was a Mitzvah Tank parked on the corner of the block my high school's on, and as I was walking passed on my way home one of the guys asked this really adorable old women "excuse me ma'am, are you a jew?" and the little old lady turned around to face the guy and practically spit in his face "NO, I'm not going to hell like YOU!"

For some it is convert or be damned - literally

Their personal eternal salvation depended, among other things, on them doing all they can to bring you into the flock. That theology and those folks frighten me the most.

So today someone wants to be my Myspace bud and ALL over their page it yells about how anything is possible through Jesus Christ and stuff like that. I have the feeling a nut ball is just trying to use me to spread the "good word."

Now I turn down folks with obscenities and body parts all over their pages because my page is a professional one but I had to think a second about turning down someone because they are fanatical about Christianity. For the most part that would play well with my potential clients.

Fantasicm turns me stomach. It doesn't matter if it is about football, dressing your dog in designer clothes and toting it around in your purse or for Christ.

BARF!

Football is a religion in the South. You don't like it? Delta is ready when you are. ;)

LOL!

Damn right I don't like it, but I ain't leaving either!

*sticks out tongue*

(I know you like that.)

Yeah, those guys. I don't know why I can't remember the freaking name. Ohhh hang on. Must google...Lubavitch.

Oh, but you have to be careful of Jews for Jesus. They seem like Jews but are not.

I had so many bad experiences being corned by these folks as a child - they really do frighten me still!

OK? But don’t Jews generally want their savior to come?

Can't really blame them for trying to help the process along... in a peaceful manner. Especially when it involves cookies and wine.

Shit, I love the Mitzvah Tanks. Maybe its hypocritical of me, but I just really love them. I can't not smile if I see one driving down the street. And the guys in them are so nice. And they don't bug you about it, just maybe hand you a pamphlet or whatever.

Jews for Jesus is a whole other organization. They're notorious for being a secret anti-semitic organization.

Well, I'd rather not see Jews disappear, so to the extent they help jews reconnect with their culture, it's a nice thing. I do get tired of the giant menorahs though.

If one so wishes to lead me to the Christian fold, please practice what you believe. Pratting does nothing to convince me.

Right now I'm going through a hard time and the brand of Christianity, mix of personalities and current needs and desires are all raising ire for me. The cables on the bridges are whipping.
