PARIS (Reuters) -- French Prime Minister Jacques Chirac stunned many today by announcing that France would consider voting in favor of the new proposal on Iraq currently before the United Nations Security Council.
Chirac stated that the cost for a vote for approval by France would come in the form of approval of another governing body in addition to the Security Council.
"If this is truly going to be a multi-lateral action, we must have a consensus from as many fronts as possible," Chirac said. "There is one powerful organization we have yet to hear from. We will vote in favor of the resolution, and I believe Russia and China will as well, if the Americans receive express written consent from Major League Baseball."
When asked why the United States would need permission from baseball, Chirac replied, "Mr. Bush used to own a baseball team. It's our belief that baseball must therefore sign off on this action. Only then can we go into Iraq."
Baseball commissioner Bud Selig could not be reached for comment.
