Just finished an article in the local paper about the burgeoning foot massage industry in Beijing. Strip joints are illegal, so apparently girls (and boys) are flocking into the capital from the countryside to work 10 hours a day bathing and massaging the feet of haughty cosmopolitans (men and women) who want to be "treated like an emperor". "Generally only the elderly can expect to have their feet washed", the article says, which describes the foot masseuses as undertrained and exploited in what is culturally regarded as "the lowest form of service".
In a photo accompanying the article, two young, attractive women sit on stools, eyes down, diligently massaging the feet of two young guys who, lounging on sofas and watching TV, apparently couldn't care less.
Fascinating and appalling. In other words, an appropriate new thread?
