I have talked to a lot of people lately who just don't get the importance philanthropy in our culture. They have told me that they believe that it does not affect society in a positive way. Do think these things have an impact on social issues. Explain.

Philanthropy is important to the culture, but it's difficult to feel compassionate for those in the 'pity' business.

Absolutely, fervently, financially and by action, but I will not reveal the specifics here, sorry.

Good topic for a thread!

I believe that philanthropy is important....and it can benefit
many organizations that help out the less fortunate, and
other areas.

I do philanthropy 5 days a week......I work w/ persons
that have mental retardation at a group home.

I rarely donate money to anything (except to sponsor people when they do things like AIDSwalk). I've always felt it was something of a copout. I would much prefer working in a soup kitchen and making personal contact with the people I'm helping than writing a check and sending it off.

Plus, I'm a college student with no money. If I had money, I would probably select a couple of charities to make annual donations to, much the same way my parents do.

Mona, what do you mean?
A lot of people have said the same thing to me about homeless people, or other groups that they feel have options.

I respect your desir to keep specifics details private, but what drives your principals?

Ditto.

And what drives me is the fact that I am a compassionate human being who is fortunate enough to be in a position to potentially help others. It's quite simple.

The principle is that the more I do for others the better I feel. It's a simple truth, but it applies across the board so I try to live it.

I'm saying that some people beg unecessarily.
They have their facalties and health (mental and physical) and have no reason not to work.

They have their stories rehearsed perfectly and just the right expression with which to get the money.

I don't have any problem with helping those unfortunate souls who have no resources or any outlet to get money,
but some people take it too far.

For my discourse theory class, I wrote a very general paper about why people should be more active in philanthropy, and adressed some of the reasons some people are not more active. For the final exam, I need to expand the paper about the larger social issues involved with charity/philanthropy.
