Catholics on Lit?

Hello, everybody, I had a question for some people, and hopefully the answers will be informative to everyone, including myself.

This question goes out primarily to Catholics, but anyone is more than welcome to answer. I myself have recently become Catholic and will be confirmed on Easter. I have a very hard time agreeing with the Church's views on sex, birth control, etc. I wanted to hear what other Catholics like myself have done to reconcile their beliefs with the Church's.

Thanks!

<siiiiiiiigh> damn that search function. I have 50 dollars to help put it back into working order.

I know what you mean, BUT, I'll answer this Q anyway.

I have MAJOR issues with the Catholic Church, and YES, I am Catholic. I'll probably burn in hell according to the hardcore Catlics, for NOT going with what the system tells us we HAVE to live our lives like.

The ultimate desicion on how you live YOUR life, is with YOU, not the Church, not ANYONE else. PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!

If the priests only knew waht I did on MY time, they'd never let me back in the churches.

im catholic and well, i dont agree with their dogmas either on sex, drinking etc... and hence i dont follow them. i would say that 85% of catholics don't follow it.

I am not a catholic but from what I understand of The Cathechism andstudies of Catholicism, it is the best man made religion to join in, especially if you are into perpetually sinning.

cause all you have to do is go to confession and tell a HUMAN all your sins, and then you'll get to do a few 'Hail Mary's' and 'Fathers Thou Arts' which you can blow off and confess in your next visit.

and If your not sure you confessed enough while you were alive, just get some of your surviveing family to pay the priest for the rest of thier lives to pray you out of purgatory.

don't worry about hell only murderers go there, sinners go to purgatory but your family can buy your way out.

Its not like any of those mean protestant religions where if you do anything your fucked

I could not have said this better. I have never agreed with the Church's position on sex, birth control, homosexuality, abortion, ect. You do what you feel is best, don't let others make up your mind for you. :)

Todd, I've been to Purgatory. Great ski resort there.

What? You're not talking about the place in Colorado? Ok, sorry.

Thats ok, its was a dishonest, uh, I mean honest mistake on your part :p

I am Catholic and don't agree with all of it's views as stated above. Rather than blindly follow some creed written thousands of years ago, I make my peace with Him, the Big Guy, the Major Dude rather than confess to a mortal. Am I forgiven and free from hell or purgatory? I don't know. I will find out when I die.

Frankly, if you find a good, new age priest, you will find a slightly different perspective on some of the issues, not all.

The Church evolves , slowly, as does any community or culture.

Todd, I wish my mother were here. She is a devout Catholic, but nothing like the sort of Catholics you seem to have been exposed to. She also is able to explain things well. She is tolerant, patient and doesn't look down her nose at others.

I'm a former catholic.. It was the laws and dogmas of the church that finally drove me away from it. I was damned before I was ever born, isn't that special?

I was raised in a very Catholic family.

And once a Catholic, always a Catholic. If the pope knew my thoughts, I'd be excommunicated. I am a heretic. I am the patron saint of blasphemy.

I don't believe in hell.
I don't believe Jesus gives a shit if you are Christian or not.

Religion is a system of symbols. I am not being reductionist because symbols are potent forces in all of our lives.

I'm Catholic. But when students ask me what I believe in, I tell them I believe in truth. From here I would get metaphysical, so I'll drop this.

I can say this for Mother Church however- I do see great value in Confession (Now called the Sacrement of Reconcilation). I only a couple of times have I been to Mass. I did go to Confession several years ago. Told the Priest to get out of the box and come sit with me. I did the standard routine- "Bless me Father for I have sinned, it has been many years since my last confession.

The priest was a very nice man. Most of them that I have known in my life have been very intelligent, educated, cool people. He tried to persuade me to come back to Mass. Lot's of pretty single women, he said.

But I didn't.

If ever I were to go back to church regular, I'll go to a Catholic church. It is like home in a way. I like the way the Unitarians think, but something about it gives me the heebeejeebies some time.

Can I be insulting just for a moment?

Catholicism isn't an ethnicity. It's not a club. It's a religion. A religion you either follow or you don't. So for all of you "I'm catholic but I don't listen to the Pope" people I have this to say.

IF YOU DON'T LIVE YOUR LIFE BY CATHOLIC BELIEFS AND STANDARDS YOU ARE NOT CATHOLICS

Sorry for yelling.

I was raised catholic. I had a catholic wedding(sort of). I'm not catholic.

*shakes his head* Were you ever Catholic EBW? It's much, much more than just a religion. It IS a group. It IS a sort of club. When you are baptized, you are forever Catholic, whether you deny it, are recovering from it, or have gone away from it. You're still Catholic.

I suppose. Semantics aside though the true test of whether someone is catholic or not, aside from a sort of cultural catholicism, is if they follow the church.

As a recent Cathlic convert, I feel that I can input some on this subject. Yes the church has some views that aren't exactly what everyone agrees with (birth control, and priest marriage are some of my issues I have), but doesn't everything? If you are a Republican or Democrat you don't have to agree completely with either party to vote for them, you vote for what represents your own personal views.

I know religion is a touchy subject, but you can name any religion out there and most have the same basic values, live your life as well as you can, and be respectful of the people around you. You can nit pic any religion and find things that you don't like or agree with, the Cathlic church has many of these just because it's been around for a very long time. It's done some bad things in the past, any Cathlic will admit to that, but it has moved on.

You're probably taking classes now instructing you on being a Cathlic, I suggest you ask your instructors or priest about any questions you might have. If you don't feel satisfied with their answer ask someone else. Don't go into this with doubts, there are answers out there.

I am a Catholic all my life. I believe in God, Jesus, saints and angels. The church is a different matter, I sorry those are man made rules. I don't agreed with alot them. Who to say what we have to do. I'm sorry not the church for sure.

I have to ask.

Just what drew you to join a religion you disagree with? What ned dos being Catholic fill for you that overrides the repressive views on "sex, birth control, etc?"

I joined the United Methodist church in my teens, because I enjoyed singing and they had the best choir in town. I found that I agree with that churchs teachings and official policies because they make sense for the most part and don't condemn people to damnation for believing differently or disagreeing with parts of the creed.

I left the Church because of the hypocrisy of the many "Sunday Christians" I encountered -- those who trumpet their christian charity on Sundays and are grasping, greedy, backstabbing gossips the rest of the week. (Note, "Sunday Christians" are found in EVERY church, not just the United Methodists.)

My first wife was Catholic, and I began th catechism classes so she could be married in the church -- we were eventually married in a civil ceremony because I got thrown out of the catechism classes for asking embarassing questions and not accepting "God works in mysterious ways" as a valid answer.

I seriously do wonder what makes a person join a faith that conflicts with what they believe in their heart.

Oh, I see. And I don't believe in everything America does, then I am not American?

whatever!

I had a great solution with my arguments against church dogma, etc. I quit. Yep, in 1987, the Pope toured the world...and I read a speech he gave on one of his stops, which basically said that Catholicism isn't like a cafeteria - you can't pick and choose what you will or will not believe in.....either you accept and believe in all the church's thinking and beliefs, or you don't. If you don't buy into it 100 percent, and still think you're a Catholic, you're making "a grave error." So, rather than be a hypocrite, I left the church and am now a recovering Catholic. Amazing, since the church has such tolerance for priests that molest little altar boys, but they can't see their way clear on abortion, premarital sex, etc. etc......

Another catholic checking in.............

I too have a hard time with the golden "rules", how do I reconcile my deviant nature with the church.......I figure if you live each day to the best of your ability, give of yourself, and love without prejudice.......How can God, turn you away???

My .02 cents........:)

Just my perspective...

As a backsliding Classical Protestant in love with a Catholic.

Catholicism is both a religion & a culture. Some folks don't practice both, some do.
