Catholic sex abuse horrors continue, and now a city is said to have helped them hide.

What happened has to read in the light of what conditions were like at that time.

Cover-ups in the 1960s were not the private preserve of the Catholic Church. Other institutions and organisations did them too.

Possibly the City did not have enough evidence to convict, but sufficient to damage the Church so a compromise was agreed.

What seems heinous now, would not have been seen that way then.

The sorry thing about all this is after years so many guys have come forward to claim they were abused as alter boys back in the 60's and 70's. I have two comments -

It seems odd these men could have kept quiet for 30 to 40 years. That seems suspicious. Particularly when they come forward all at the same time after being counciled. And they were all counciled by the same three counciling entities.

This problem is so bad in Oregon the Catholic Archdiocese has been forced into bankruptcy to offset the law suits. The last dollar value I heard being litigated was $40,000,000 for 15 or so guys now in their 40's and 50's. That seems pretty excessive and punitive, especially when most of the offending priests have since died and are unable to defend themselves.
