Its impossible to be certain.
It is bad when people try to do that, but there are two ways to look at it.
First, they must be either ill, broken or reeeaaally desperate to do something like that and for all of those things we might be able to find some empathy for them. Even though its really fucked up.
And the other thing is, if you are here or anywhere else on the internet, that is something you should just expect to encounter and we should all be vetting who we interact with all the time. Because you almost never know. It'd be like swimming the great barrier and not expecting tiger sharks. Why?

That's a very charitable way of looking at it, and in some cases I hope you're right. But I think they also have no conception of the strength and depth of the connections people can forge on Lit. They're maybe used to porn being anonymous pictures and words on a screen, and think that ampics and an erotic fiction community work similarly. With ampics, of course, if can be men pretending to be women to get straight men to play with them, or revenge porn (which is beyond horrible), or women pretending to be men to get other women to play with them (which has been said of me once or twice, and 99% of Lit is in no position to know). Add in the common-or-garden catfish and yep, Lit is a swamp, and I wish everyone who joined the site was forced to read and sign a couple of paragraphs explaining the risks here before they were allowed to sign up.

I think hunting catfish/fakes/Briannas is fine, and I guess it can be quite interesting. For some people, though, it can end up being the most interesting thing on a site like Lit, and I'm not sure that's such a good place to end up. And Brianna remains among one of the ten most pleasant people I've interacted with here in the past two or three years. Whether you think that says more about Lit or me is up to you.

Yeah. This is probably a good reminder to practice a healthy detachment from this place from time to time. I think social media algorithms have conditioned us all to expect a certain curated experience and we naturally fall in line with people who share points of view with us. Lit is a smattering of the entire human experience in one huge melting pot. We're all projecting a shit ton here and it can be dangerous at times.

Probably. It’s a character. Some people take well to being a character. And they only have to do it when they feel like being in character.

I agree.

I mean, it is not that I personally got a problem with people trying out different characters, they might have very good reasons.

• They could be playing with different aspects of their own personality.
• They could be trying out characters for a story.
• They could use it as an escape from their daily lives.
• They are bored/lonely and want friends.

There might be many other decent reasons.

To me, my main objection and issue with this behaviour is:

Time and place.

There is a time and place for everything, and Lit might be good for it.. if you are honest from the get-go! No lying, no sneaky hiding important facts.. be honest!

Most people here, I am making a gross assumption, are honest with whom they are.. some might hide their marriages (not cool), but in the bigger picture, I tend to assume that most people - on the Playground, at least - are whom they say they are.

That is the way we meet eachother, with trust and honesty.
And sometimes, we cannot be pleasant or enjoyable company - we are real people.

Lying about whom you are here... That is a real d..k move.

If we did not care about honesty and real life people.. well, then it would be less complicated and a whole lot easier to get an AI girlfriend/boyfriend.
Then we could get a supportive partner who never disagreed with us, but no matter what we said or did would have our back..
That there might be some ethical issues with this setup does not change the fact that it is becoming a fast growing business.

Well in fact, in that moment I was trying to be as charitable as I can be. Which typically doesn't come to me naturally regarding other humans. It hasn't ever happened to me and that probably made it easier for me to look for reasons why it happens at all.
Perhaps age, and my time here seeing people of all sorts and varieties come and go has softened me to it.
The truth is I just see behind it.
Were it not typically so damaging to people with the biggest and most open and vulnerable hearts, we'd just laugh about it every time. But, there are some genuinely sweet and good people here (dark corners aside) and its truly a shame a place like this and people like that might jade them against trust. But it happens.

As far as hunting, for me that endeavor is reserved for something I intend to eat. But to each their own. We thank them for their service.

I’m sure. There was no outing per se as I recall but one of her “relatives” posted that she had passed
