Categories that you have or always will avoid

But I tied myself up in knots (boom-tish!) - the main theme is the usual yada-yada dominant black husband, submissive white wife, but then the minefield of then switching so she's the owner and he's the slave. It's the interplay between them as she takes ownership that was the seed for the story. Not sure how it's gonna go.

I remember Og posting here a few years back, saying that he'd posted in EVERY category, as a challenge to himself.

I can imagine writing in any category (except non-English), but most of them woudln't really get me off at all.

The most out of my comfort zone was when I wrote a group sex story. All those limbs and fluids everywhere.

I've learned to never say "never". I have been paid to write everything from gay romance to children's books. Money is a great motivator.

I can say that where Literotica is concerned, I will not share stories in most categories here, simply because I write things for this site that interest me alone. I did take a shot at writing a series for the I/T category just to see what the results would be and that was interesting, but not something that I will expand upon or continue.

Some question why several of my stories are on this site since they contain no erotic content, but not every reader comes here for arousal.

I see that mash-up in its historical context, because I suspect when the site was set up, there were few transgender stories. I think I asked Laurel to change the original title from Transexual/Crossdressing but my memory is hazy on that. I accept that categories are full of both types of story and it would take a huge effort to separate them retrospectively.

I've never been able to understand the distinction between Mature and Erotic Couplings so I dropped a story into each without the world spinning off axis.

I would love to claim I've never written incest, but I have two sisters exploring sex in my Fishing series. I might sound disingenuous to criticise incest, but parent/child is a line I'd never cross or wish to read.

Other categories don't hold any fear for me, but I'm simply not interested in them. If I found an idea that would fit into Non-Human or SciFi then I'd write it, but are tentacles non-human or sci-fi?

I've been asked once or twice for advice on a trans story and I'm open to that. If it's a tedious one, I'm likely to just say "It looks fine. Well done." but occasionally an author decides to introduce medical details that need more care. Typically it's advice for broaching the topic of dicks or how not to insult a transgender person. Happily being transgender is less of a mystery these days ( despite the perception from some quarters that we're all deranged pedophiles ) and fucking is fucking.

Yeah, I tend to stick to group as I like working within that category, not that I would be opposed to working outside it.

I think most of the other categories I’d stay away from with my sexual repertoire being so limited.

Maybe I’d dip into sci-fi, maybe Novel/Novellas, maybe fetish, maybe celebrity/fan fiction (although one could argue HOT AND FUZZY may qualify under that bracket, or even humour/satire) but looking at the other categories nothing else really appeals.

Sorry for being boring once again…and now, back to my cup of tea.

Which tends to result in fewer readers and votes. C'est la vie.

It's not so much I forget that the world isn't full of kinky polyamorous bisexuals, as I often can't be bothered to use my imagination to write about the others, so that restricts the audience for half my stories.

Categories I've done:

Anal - suggested as the best place for high views outside I/T. A fussy bunch, but lots of them.

BDSM - Audience smaller than you might think, unless it's a simple story of a man and his one twue female submissive. But generally receptive.

EC - so many stories, yours can get lost if you don't have an excellent title and tagline to grab people.

Erotic Horror - not many readers.

E&V - used once when a chapter fit, worked well

Fetish - generally appreciative audience even when stuff isn't quite what they expect/hope for. Laurel put a story there which I'd had as EC, and no-one complained about the category or content (Gas Station Guy).

First Time - quite high views and ratings.

Gay sex - reasonable bunch who rate well, but they don't comment much.

Group Sex - fewer readers than you'd think.

I/T - tried this to see if I could write a story with my tinge of realism, which that audience would like, given I have zero interest. 5x more views than any of my other stories. If nothing else, unlike most of my stories which struggle to get 20 votes, I can be sure that with nearly 1000 votes it actually merits a red H.

Lesbian sex - got a high scoring and a low scoring story there. The low one isn't that bad, but probably too kinky for most readers there.

Romance - nice comments and generous ratings.

Trans - not many views, but then it wasn't a woman-plus-cock story. Well, not fetishising it.


I have a vague aspiration to try every story category (not audio or illustrated), with LW last, for obvious reasons. I have some fanfic on AO3 I could publish here - there's a way smaller audience here. Vampires work for non-human, right? I read a fair bit of SF/F but rarely find it erotic - though the Vorkosigan saga manages it.


NC/R is a category I thought I'd like to read - reluctance can be fascinating. Nancy Friday's earlier volumes of women's sexual fantasies were full of NC/R. Only the Lit stories I found were way more rapist fantasies than that, with the 'but she enjoyed it really' either tacked on, or when it wasn't, a scene she didn't enjoy (not necessarily sexual) added. Only time I've reported a story. Mind control could be similarly squicky but there's always the 'lust potion/pollen only acts when the person really wants to anyway' trope.

About to post a Humor & Satire. Could do How to, Reviews/Essays, Toys, Transcripts etc. I've considered Mature for various middle-aged/disabled sex but never finished such stories yet. Interracial I want to avoid the black/white BBC cliches, but adding the tag to a couple stories has led to lots of views (if not appreciation!).

I've translated a few paragraphs of my stories into German for my own amusement, so will go for a whole story at some point. Will need an editor!

But as a subject for fiction, I believe that interracial sex remains valid. Self-discovery, and the discovery of the reality for someone else, are core story topics in many categories here. So is a situation in which presumed tolerance is found to be vapor (such as when a character is faced with the old saw, ‘would you let one marry your daughter?’). What is posted in Interracial here may often fall back on stereotypes, but the category can (and should) host worthwhile works.

The IR section has some really bad writing and porn influenced stories which have little or no basis in reality. However, there are some writers in that section who do and damned good job of portraying the genre well. @RyanTyler98 is one of them. I have favorited him as an author.

The thing I hate most about a lot of IR is the black guy reduced to animal trope. And also pairing said guys with the smallest possible white girl. It’s a direct line of sight to KKK bullshit about “our women” being raped.

I’ve written MF interracial, but the guy’s ethnicity was not central to it. I’ve also written FF interracial, but only Caucasian / Korean (based on my own experience). Again ethnicity was not central. I’ve also had sex with an ethnically Middle Eastern girl, haven’t referenced that in writing though (it was a brief fling, unlike my Korean-American friend).

Never say "never". I feel the same way about the topic, however, having direct familial experience with the realities. Nearly all categories here dispense with reality, but with incest, like NC/R, the fantasy diverges from the real world in very unhealthy ways.

That said, I have an incest piece in the mill that is not in any way sexy or fun. It is a telling of an IRL story of lives irreversibly damaged and a family torn apart at the deepest levels. It may or may not see the light of day, provided I have the guts to finish it. The IRL protagonist is long-deceased and the antagonist is such a vile human being I shouldn't care, but I do care about the individual at the center, and remain reluctant to publish as long as they are in my life.

The categories here have an eccentric classification structure. As a reader there are no 'subject' categories without some interest somewhere for me (just given the sheer volume and amount of writerly talent, there will be a good story buried in the mix.)

As a writer, a minor goal is to hit all of them (I won't) but the non-subject parameters will pose the biggest problems (format [audio], or premise [chain stories], or other 'non-' [non-erotic, non-english]).

I used to think I had fairly broad-spectrum sexual interests until I got here (understatement) and I have to say it is an extreme challenge to write a kink you don't possess. But that's what contests/author challenges are good for, broaden the range and provide an opportunity to expand. And I think as a person you can learn a lot about life by writing characters different from yourself.

25 under the belt so far, I'll likely notch another couple and then call the category quiver depleted.

This is another weird one about people's opinion on category redlines. The same people who despise MC (newsflash: doesn't exist) have no problem writing incest, which does exist and does irreparable damage to it's victims.
