Casting Call/OOC: The Tower Academy

Well, and it's the problem of all those religious fanatics who see it as bad that already distrust wizards. Paladins are always looking for a reason to whipe something off the face of the world :p

Theres a lot more to necromancy than just animating corpses though! :) I'd say a good deal of it is divination from bones, the position of dead creatures that you find, the way that innards fall after an animal sacrifice, etc.

I'd also say that it would involve communicating with the dead, or capturing spirits to use as servants.

To bad this is a school of wizardy...Being a paladin is fun. You get to be full of yourself, get to kill things in the name of god and you condemn innocent people to death because they are "witches" ;)

Animal sacrifice is for priests. We're mages, and above such things! We just take their innards for components to weave the very fabric of the universe to our wills! TO TWIST REALITY TO THE FURTHEST EXTENT OF OUR TWISTED DREAMS AND WISHES! BWAH HA HA HA HA! BWAH HA HA HA!

*blows something up* There. Now I feel better.

I wouldn't say animal sacrifices are just for priests, I've read a lot of fantasy that involved killing animals as part of spellcrafting! And anyway... my character is a priestess ;)

At any rate, I won't join if you guys don't want me in. I'll just await word.

im for it.

I think this one is best left to DrStein. Dark arts are cool, and I have no problem with a teacher here, but I don't run the thread! :D

Well, I could see you mayhaps being there to visit, and maybe teach about stuff, but definitely not any magic. Because, plain and simple, this is supposed to be an academy of mages and priests use divine magic and not the arcane.

But then again my mind is bound by the set rules of TSR >_>

I'm not teaching divine arts. Get out of the AD&D mindset! :) Or... get into third edition. I'm dual class! ;)

How bout this idea -- a novel one from the look of things. *points at thread starter*

Let's not disenchant him before someone gets a chance to ensorcel the poor guy. :D

Thats what I'm doing. :)

On the topic of necromancy, it's actually a very nebulous art in magic. It's not limited to the reanimation of dead flesh and bones.

An example of a professor of necromancy at the tower academy would be an individual who specializes in spirits. He can communicate with the recently dead, interact with ghosts, perform exorcisms, ward grounds against the undead (soulless creatures), and so on.

On that note, necromancers would be allowed within the Tower Academy, but the classes would have a stricter sense of discipline as the powers of this particular school of magic are particularly susceptible to abuse, and some of the more advanced spells require Faustian bargains and trade-offs on the part of the spellcaster, something that has resulted in many amateurs suffering fates worse than death when they overestimated their skills.

Absolutely.

As long as we're on the topic, the Tower Academy gets its reputation as the best not simply for its facilities, but also because of the inclusiveness. The standard fare of confuration, transmutation, evocation, and so on is covered. But so are shamanic and totemic magics. Song magic is in the curriculum, as well as elementalism, runes, glyphs, and so on.

The guards of the academy are known as spellswords because their ability to blend martial disciplines with magic.

The list goes on.

Bards!?!

Honestly, who would want to voluntarily put forth the time and effort to become a Bard :p

Whats wrong with bards? They are masters of everything,They illuminate our minds with fun stories and tales of granduer and far of lands. There songs inspire people to great feats of strength and courage.

Name:Cedric Kent

Race:Human

Age:Unknown-looks twenty

Height:5'6

Weight:120

Occupation: Teacher of transmutation

Hair:dirty blond

Eyes:baby blue

Discription:Cedric has always been considered a runt where he came from. Standing a very very small height of 5'6(short for being a human) Cedric is a very frail and wimpy looking guy. As thin as a twig, hes gangly and not very manly looking. Bright white(though not anywhere close to albino) he is borderline pale from lack of sun to his body.Cedric has a young looking face, with high bone cheeks and widows peek and a well defined chin.Looking a lot like a ghost,he has all bright white teeth and has dirty blonde hair that is short, yet not well kept, always in some sort of disarray from hours of sleeping face down on his desk.Despite being a weakling and weighing in at only 120 pounds, cedric has a wild, animalistic looking his light blue eyes,a inner fire is reflected in the depths of his eyes, the fire fueled by all the disrespect and rude remarks he recieved as a kid.

Backstory: Cedric Kent was born into an average family,in some small backwater villiage that no one cares about or can rarely even find. The entire villiage was surronded by a dense and dark forest that became the natural borders around the villiage with only one path comming from the east and exiting out to the west. The path was rarely travelled though because people never dared going through the dark forest, there was rumors of beasts on the outside, monsters that would consume any unwary travellers. Cedric was born to a merchant and his whore. His parents met in some big city somewhere along the coast, got hitched after a night of drinking and moved on togather to give birth to Cedric. Cedric was a small child since he was born and the minitue his parents had him,his dad hated him. Cedric grew up quick in a broken house, where his dad would beat him and harass Cedric for not being some great warrior or some massive atheletic jock, like all the other kids around. Cedric often escaped outside to be bullied by kids his age that were stronger and bigger than him. Cedric became used to pain, walking home with black eyes and robbed off most of his stuff. Cedric never let it get him down because his mother was always to cheer him up or take care of him. His mother was the only person who ever cared for Cedric, yet when Cedric turned 10,he came home one day to find his mother was gone. He spent days upon days in his room,in isolation...away from all the darkness as suddenly his world was ruptured. No one figured out what happened to his mother,it was chalked up as she was taken by the beasts in the forest, yet Cedric knew better,he knew his father had killed his mother but he was to frail or weak to do anything about. Cedric spent most of his next years alone in his room, consumed by books. One book though was key to him. He found it while sifting through his mother's stuff. It was leather bound and big, with dust on all pages and looking to be a hundreds of years old.Open the pages,he found nothing but blank pages but then suddenly the pages began to become covered in a spidery langague, that of magic, though Cedric didn't know it. Spending days upon days in his room, alone. Not eating, not sleeping and just staring blankly at the pages until one day the langague began to blur and then suddenly the words translated to common. Cedric began to read and read, there was no word or page that he didn't memorize.Suddenly Cedric found a way to get back...Transmutation was the key to becoming something else,to become someone else. Smirking Cedric began his quest of vengence. One dark night,Cedric rose his hands and began to softly chant the incantation to a spell. Suddenly, his body began to change, screaming out in pain as his body began to enlarge, his mucles began to thicken and become rock hard, his suddenly found himself a little stuffed as fur began to cover his body,a dark red fur, with white stripes.Standing in his room at a full height of 6'5,covered in blood red fur with massive claws,Cedric smirked as he moved to his father's room. After days of searching, the town told a "heartbroken" Cedric that he was now an orphan because his dad must have been killed by the same beast that killed him mother.Transmutation became Cedric's ally, his sheild against persecution. Every night, another boy went missing, another person went missing until Cedric had killed everyone, had made everyone pay for calling him weak, for making fun of him and beating on him. Suddenly the beasts on the outside of town were nothing compared to the beast inside of Cedric...Every night, the beast became more and more of a problem until there was no one left. Cedric could not control it any longer...he had to escape...he had to run when one day he met a elderly wizard who told him about a place where he could go and learn to control the animal inside of him. Entering the Academy a day later(having turned into a bird and flown there) Cedric quickly became the Protege of the transmutation teacher. Cedric studied day and night to become a master,to fight the demon inside of him. During his last year as a student,he married the love of his life,a fellow student. One night after graduation....the transmutation teacher and Cedric's wife both dissappeared. Enraged,Cedric fled the castle on a quest to find them. He tracked them across the mountians, through the dark forest and back to his villiage, where he found both of them tied to a Pyre, burning. Enraged,Cedric became the beast he used to be and murdered everyone, killing and killing all of them, becoming more animal than human and by the time the mob had been destroyed,Cedric returned to his humanoid form to find his wife and mentor nothing but ash........his howl peirced through the night and cedric wandered. Finally finding his way back to the academy,he met with the headmaster and was given the position of Transmutation teacher. Cedric still blamed himself for the murder of his wife and his master, the mob out for his blood for the massacure of all those people when he was younger. Becoming a recluse,Cedric kept to himself though found to his suprise to be an excellent teacher...though not a very social one, spending nights alone in the darkness of his room....letting his demons and his sorrows rule him, drive him to madness.

The idea of 'Sing-a-long to Destruction' isn't quite as nice as one would think ;)

(If there is still room available, I would like to join. It has been a long time since I last role played on these boards, so I might be a little rusty in the beginning.)

Name: Kaili Whispersong
Race: High Elf
Age: unknown
Height: 155cm
Weight: 38.5kg
Hair: long, straight and black
Eyes: violet with a smattering of golden flecks
Title: Professor of Alchemy

Description:

She always wears robes made from the finest spider silk available. Spider silk is known for its protection properties against acid spills and fire burns. Her hair is usually worn in a long thick braid that falls well past her knees. Her eyes appear to be slightly too large on her small pale face. Like all elven folk, her features are delicate and lovely, though unlike her kin, her eyes are cold and at times, cruel. As an elf, she is able to live nearly forever. Her true age is unknown but her appearance is that of a young female woman.

Backstory:

Kaili Whispersong, a daughter of one of the elven nobility houses. Though gifted in elven magics, she preferred the more understated science of alchemy. This was unheard of since alchemy was closely associated with witchcraft rather than elven magic but Kaili did not care.

She delighted in creating poisons and clever potions. But what really pleased her, was testing and using her creations on others. It was rumored that she poisoned her first lover because he hinted of dissolving their new relationship. Another rumor circulated that she had given a love potion to her younger sister and older brother, causing a scandalously delicious incestuous affair between those two. And when the potion wore off, the shame and distress for the two siblings resulted in madness for one and suicide for the other. Kaili was never implicated yet she never denied the rumors either. She just smiled.

Kaili became very skilled over time. She acquired ancient forbidden recipes and with firm dedication to her craft, she became a Master Alchemist. Her talent was so great that the academy contacted her to become the new professor of alchemy (apparently the other alchemist had died from tasting one of his own concoctions.)

She had been teaching for nearly 30 years at the academy. Despite this, she did not get along with the other teachers. Nor was she a favorite among students. Because of the strict and regal way she ran her classes, the students had given her the nickname Ice Queen but none dared to call her that in front of her. The last student who did was forced to test his own potion he was working on and the results were less than desirable. Instead of turning invisible, he turned purple and stayed like that.

Kaili has no love for her students. To her, they are simply play things. Test subjects. Victims for her own entertainment if she was bored. But she was an excellent teacher. Students who passed her classes acquired knowledge that greatly benefited their own magical abilities. So the tip older students passed to younger ones each year was the same: Study and don’t mess around in Professor Whispersong’s classes…ever.

Kaili also had no love for her fellow teachers. In fact, she looked down on all of them even the headmaster. But only to him will she defer some measure of respect since he has been teaching at the academy the longest. No one has ever ventured to see what really lies beneath the icy exterior of the professor of alchemy.

You're speaking to a metalhead. Specifically, one who is a fan of bands like Children of Bodom, Savatage, and Manowar.

Manowar - Hail and Kill

Brothers I am calling from the valley of the kings
With nothing to atone
A dark march lies ahead, together we will ride
Like thunder from the sky
May your sword stay wet like a young girl in her prime
Hold your hammers high

Blood and death are waiting like a raven in the sky
I was born to die
Hear me while I live
As I look into your eyes
None shall hear a lie
Power and dominion are taken by the will
By divine right hail and kill

Hail, Hail, Hail, Hail and Kill, Hail and Kill
Hail, Hail, Hail, Hail and Kill, Hail and Kill

My father was a wolf
I'm a kinsman of the slain
Sworn to rise again
I will bring salvation, punishment and pain
The hammer of hate is our faith
Power and dominion are taken by the will
By divine right hail and kill
Hail, Hail, Hail, Hail and Kill, Hail and Kill
Hail, Hail, Hail, Hail and Kill, Hail and Kill

Rip their flesh
Burn their hearts
Stab them in the eyes
Rape their women as they cry
Kill their servants
Burn their homes
Till there's no blood left to spill
Hail and Kill
Power and dominion are taken by the will
By divine right hail and kill

Hail, Hail, Hail, Hail and Kill, Hail and Kill

Now that's a bard you want fighting on your side.

Professor Whispersong should be very interesting to watch in this thread.

Though we still need more testosterone in the thread, it's hard to pass up a character like this.
