Cartoons

I still get a kick out of the Rocky and Bullwinkle show. Beanie and Cecil as well. Both of them were loaded with double entendres.

LOL … some of the old stuff is amazing … particularly Fleischer Studios. Not just Popeye. I go back and watch St. James Infirmary and Minnie the Moocher several times a year.

But yeah we’re in a golden age of animation right now. So much amazing art, so much good writing and voice acting. It’s crazy how people think that nothing has happened since Chuck Jones. (Who also is great, but that was 60 years ago!)

Current favs:

She-Ra — the Noel Stevenson reboot.

Little Witch Academia — Like Harry Potter but so much better.

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! — Three high school girls start their own anime studio.

I can appreciate Bo-Jack but it wasn’t really my thing. I tend to gravitate to sweeter, more upbeat stuff. But then … Archer … omg Archer. I need to catch up with the last few seasons.

And so much classic anime! The whole Ghibli catalog! Akira and Ghost in the Shell and FLCL and Cowboy Bebop and Kill La Kill!

I finally watched Neon Genesis Evangelion for the first time this year. OMG … I would have fan-girled that so hard if I’d seen it in the 90s … .

Other than I was REALLY slow on the Catra/Adora ship cus they reminded me a lot more of Kim Possible and She-Go. They weren't enemies, they were having violent conversations with friends that was great.

While its not at all cut from the same cloth the new He-Man is legit.

If you want more She-ra esque story telling you could do much worse than 'Legend of Korra'.

Is 'Little Witch Acadamia' that good. I keep trying, and trying and I feel like that is the bronco that keeps bucking me. I mean at least its polite enough to buck me into 'Jojo's Bizarre Adventure' but still

In that case, try Tuca & Bertie, if you haven't already. Still edgy, but optimistic.

Have you seen the new episodes they put out ~2 years ago? Also, if you like Jon Benjamin of Archer & Bob's Burgers, make sure you see Home Movies: https://youtu.be/GCpNWWLjMHo

And Big Mouth is crude as hell, but features some of the best comedic talent in the industry. Wish it had been around when I was 12.

I’ve heard good things about Tuca & Bertie. It got cancelled, right? But then they decided to renew it after all. I should check it out.

I watched the new FLCL, but it didn’t have the same magic for me. The original was so crazily ambitious and experimental. The manga-style episode. The bit where they lapsed into Southpark-style animation for a bit. The new one didn’t feel like it was taking the same risks.

But … Home Movies! Yes! H. Jon Benjamin is so great in everything. My husband still refers to him as Coach McGuirk whenever he hears his voice. And if you like Home Movies, do you like Metalocalypse? It’s so hard to believe Brendon Small is also Nathan Explosion.

All the voice actors in Bob’s Burgers are amazing. Kristin Schaal … oh my god!

I often think of her when I’m on Lit, because there’s a scene in Toy Story 3 where Woody catches her (as Trixie the dinosaur) privately chatting with another dinosaur toy on the computer, and Schaal’s response is so deliciously laden with guilt.

Woody: "Who's Velocistar237?"

Trixie: "Oh! That's just a dinosaur toy down the street, that's nothing, let me just take care of that. It's just a dinosaur!"

I’m scared to watch Big Mouth because of the cringe factor. I have this horrible feeling it might too closely replicate my own experiences in middle school …. .

i think i watched maybe two episodes of the newer FLCL. i could not get into them at all. yes, the original is a classic, but they really should've just let it be. it was perfect as it was as just a bit of wonderful madness.

Whatever y'all are running on about might be animated, but that doesn't make them cartoons.

“Ask not the sparrow how the eagle soars!” … I just noticed your sig :D

Catra … oh my heart! I was so glad they let the two of them be together at the very end. They were both so broken by their horrible childhoods. And they both kept missing what the other one was trying to say. <sniff>

I tried watching JoJo but when the evil brother killed the dog I was just like “Nope nope nope I’m out!” I’ve been told that set-up pays off later, but I’ll never see it. It’s like that one infamous bit with the dog in Fullmetal Alchemist … .

With LWA you have to fall in love with the characters. If you don’t click with Akko and Diana and Akko’s roommates right from the start it might be tough going. All the payoff is in how the relationships unfold. But everyone doesn’t have to like everything. There’s sooooo much other good stuff to watch.

MAybe I'll give it another shot. They added the last two arcs of HunterxHunter and I must complete my mission before I move on to somemore bizarro shit.

Any suggestions? I have found that my female animation fans are so much better than my men. MY men will Dragon Ball, Naruto, Bleach, Hunter Hunter. I'm lucky if one tells me about Soul Eater or Death Note and after that they are trash.

The ladies are like "did you know there is a blood sucking monokini that involves cutting the clothes off mostly females. Oh and for no reason anybody can tell there is a show about a cooking so good people have orgasms.

Ohhh you want bizarro shit? <cracks knuckles>

Hozuki no Reietsu — The second-in-command in Japanese hell who has to solve bureaucratic problems. He’s insanely good at office politics. Lots of fun riffs on Japanese folklore.

Dropkick My Devil — Goth girl accidentally summons a snake-tailed demon and they become chaste lesbian roommates.

My Dragon Maid — The same thing but with a butch female office worker and an ancient female dragon. (Chaste lesbian romances are big these days.)

So I’m a Spider, So What? — My favorite isekai. Entire high school class is killed and reincarnated in a fantasy world. The shy girl comes back as a very cute giant spider who is also insanely deadly.

The Saga of Tanya the Evil — My second favorite isekai. Ruthless salaryman is reincarnated as a little girl in fantasy 20th Century Europe. She rises to a command position in the army (still as a little girl) and invents the concept of total war.

Gate — My third favorite isekai. (Sense a pattern?) Medieval fantasy world opens a gate to our world and invades. The Japanese Self-Defense Force retaliates with modern weapons and kicks ass. There’s a thousand-year-old death priestess who looks like a goth Lolita! And a princess named Pina Colada!

Pop Team Epic — Super short surreal gags riffing on Japanese pop culture. Weirder that the weirdest Adult Swim. Even I can barely follow the references.

I’m sure I’ll think of more. I watch a LOT of anime. Right now I’m working my way through all of One Piece because I ignored it the first time around and shonen trash is a great way to relax before bed … .

Oh god one more really weird one! Darling in the FranXX is a series about giant mechas piloted by male-female teams. Only … the female pilots are on their hands and knees in the cockpit and their male partners sit behind them holding control yokes attached to their hips. (Yes, it’s exactly as suggestive as it sounds.)

However despite starting off with heavy, heavy fan service, it actually finishes as a sweet coming-of-age story as the pairs of pilots grapple with their feelings toward each other and their discovery of the truth about their world. (It’s made by Studio Trigger the same people who did Kill La Kill and it has a similar wild mix of blatant sexual innuendo, off the wall action, and deep emotional chords.)

I don’t see the old school cartoons anymore. Fliintstones and the Jetsons is where it’s at.
Do you have your bowl of cereal?

Hi Fluff! 😋

A lot of old cartoons no longer pass the PC test.

You have to find them on DVD...

True enough.

But I am also in Quebec, where over half of my TV channels are in French. So a whole lot of Caillilou 🙄

Scooby Doo
Josie and the Pussy Cats

I'll see your Josie and raise you a 'Gem and The Holograms'.

I think I did Pop Team Epic and it hurt my soul. Maybe we dial it back a half step into 'Kill la Kill' and 'Akame la Kill' occupy a similar space for no real reason.

Have you done Jojo or Code Geass?

Everything else I suggested is much more normal than Pop Team Epic. But then Aqua Teen Hunger Force is much more normal than Pop Team Epic … . :D

I’ve heard of Code Geass but know nothing about it. I’ll take a look though!

I tried Jojo and noped out because of the cruelty. I could see the appeal of it, and I could tell they were just building up my hatred for the bad brother so Jojo’s triumph over him would be more satisfying, but it crossed a line for me.

Wasn't that more 'live action' kind of thing than animated?
