format a disc so it can be used to copy files?

Trail doesn't know how, and I surely don't...anyone? He tried to go ito "File" and clicked "copy" but got a "access denied" message, so we're thinking the disc needs to be formatted in some manner first?

He is using Windows ME. Thanks very much.

In "My Computer" right click on the floppy drive icon, and there should be an option "Format". That should do the trick. If that doesn't work then open a command prompt and type

format a:

Hope everything works out.

Are you talking about a floppy disk or a CD?

If it's a CD, then you can't unless you have a CDRW drive.

If it's a floppy, then you should be able to format it from Windows Explorer.

Thanks very much...I'm pretty certain he means a floppy, but I'll check. I appreciate the help!:)

I am thinking the "access denied" message came not because the floppy was not formatted, but rather because it was write protected. Try making sure that the little tab in the corner hole is closed, not open. I.E., you should not be able to see through the hole. It is also possible that the floppy has certain rights for certain users setup on it.

Also, another real possibility is that the "access denied" message refers to the file you are trying to copy, not on the destination. If the file is in use this can happen, or it can happen if certain other security options are setup on the file, although I am not sure how far that goes with non-NT version of Windows.

Thank you very much!

I was wrong, he is using a CD, and does have the writer thingie for it.:) For whatever reason, he can't get it to copy...I suggested that he go into the ReadWrite software and try formatting it from there, but he ran out of time. I'll just let him address all this when he gets a chance...I was trying to save him a little time. Thanks again.:)

Well, if he is trying to burn a CDR, you don't format CDRs. If he is trying to copy a file to a CD-RW, then the CD-RW must be formatted first, but if it already has files on it then it is already formatted. If he is trying to copy files to an already burnt CD-R and it has the disc closed then no more files can be copied to it. If he is trying to copy files to just a plain CD, one that is not a CDR but is a prerecorded CD, that just won't work.

However, the error messages for all those are usually not "access denied". "Access denied" usually comes either from the file being in use by a process, or from the current user not being allowed access to the file due to security settings.

Thank you for your replys, I was at work (construction) and was trying to leave some files on a cd for my partner.

It appears that windows ME has no provision for formatting a blank cd.

The solution was a music cd program that had a section for data cds. The files were copied in the end.....Thanks again to Tap Out, Svenmn,Raw humor, The Heretic, and of course Intrigued..your the best baby :)
